How and When to Enroll in Medicare
The enrollment for Medicare starts right before yo
u turn 65. So, if it's three months before your b
irthday or in the window of seven months after
you've turned 65, you are in "open enrollment."
You could experience penalties if you
delay your enrollment. To be eligible for
enrollment, you must be a US citizen and legal
resident for at least five continuous years.More
than 24 of Maine residents (332,242 people) are
enrolled in Maine Medicare. Compared to Maine, 21
of residents in New Hampshire
(293,000 people) are enrolled in . It's also imp
ortant to understand what is covered in Parts A,
B, C, and D.
3
What is covered by Parts A, B, C, D of
Medicare?
Medicare Parts A and B are the plans that fall
under Original Medicare. Part A coverage is for
hospitalization, lab tests, surgery, home heal
th care, etc. Park B coverage
is for outpatient care, home health, diagnostic
screenings, equipment, and services that are
medically necessary. You'll automatically receive
the card and benefits if you're eligible.
4
An estimated 31 of Maine residents who sign up f
or Medicare select Medicare Advantage Plans Main
e, also known as Part C. The number of options
will vary depending on the county, with a maxi
mum of 310 plans in Maine. To give you some
perspective, there are 2,317 Medicare Advantage
plans nationwide, but most US residents who are
enrolled in Medicare had 21 Medicare Advantage
plan options in 2018. With the Part C plan,
private insurers are required to cover all the
medically necessary and critical care options
from Parts A and B, with hospice care still
covered by Part A. With Part C, you still sign up
for Part A and B, and you still pay the premi
um for Part B. Then you sign up for a
private insurer for the Medicare Advantage plan, w
hich can cover dental and vision, as well as
prescription drug coverage. Since each plan
offers different benefits, it's important to
carefully review and understand what is covered
by the Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
or Preferred Provider Organizations
(PPOs). Approximately 17 of New Hampshire residen
ts are enrolled in Medicare Advantage, with opti
ons for 172 Medicare Advantage plans.

Approximately 43 of Maine residents who are on
Medicare are also enrolled in Part D, which add
s coverage for prescriptions as either a standa
lone plan or as part of a Medical Advantage pla
n. In New Hampshire, 56 of the state's Medicare
population (some 163,749 Medicare beneficiaries)
signed up for Medicare Part D prescription
coverage. Part D is particularly important to
consider as an option if you have lots of
medications. If you do not sign up for Part D
during the initial enrollment period when you
turn 65, you can sign up during open enrollment.
Enrollment in Medicare Part D has increased
dramatically since it was first launched in
2006. Prescription coverage (formulary) will cove
r depending on which plan you and provider you s
elect. The right Medicare solution for you will
depend on your personal situation, as well as
the level of coverage you think you might need
both now and in the future. Of course, you can
change your coverage during the open enrollment
periods every year. Even the basic Medicare Part
A and B coverage an important benefit to take
advantage of as you consider your health and
medical concerns. If you have any questions
