WHAT ARE FOSSILS
A fossil "obtained by digging" is any preserved
remains, impression, or trace of any once-living
thing from a past geological age. Examples
include bones, shells, exoskeletons, stone
imprints of animals or microbes, objects
preserved in amber, hair, petrified wood, oil,
coal, and DNA remnants. The totality of fossils
is known as the fossil record.
3
HOW DO FOSSILS FORM ?
Fossils form when a dead animal or plant is
covered by sediment. Eventually, the organic
matter in the bone or plant, such as the blood
vessels and tissue, slowly turns into rock, which
becomes known as a fossil, the process of
fossilization takes place over millions of years.
4
WHERE ARE FOSSILS FOUND
Fossils are mostly found where sedimentary rocks
of the right age are exposed, such as river
valleys, cliffs and hillsides, and human-made
exposures such as quarries and road cuttings.
Fossils are often unearthed during construction
or new mining projects. As the ground is dug up
and moved about, fossils once hidden deep
underground suddenly come to light. In a similar
way, you can often find fossils in shallow stream
beds
