    relationships.
  • With advancing medical science, doctors are

  • FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT DEMENTIA
  • 1.THE MOST COMMON FORM OF DEMENTIA
  • Alzheimers disease is the most known form of
dementia. The definition of dementia is a brain
disease which leads to memory loss and cognitive
skills. There are different types of dementia
which includes Mixed dementia, Vascular dementia,
dementia with Lewy bodies, Huntingtons disease,
    Parkinsons disease.
  • 2.THE HEART AND HEAD IS CLOSELY RELATED
  • Heart disease raises the risk of getting
Alzheimers disease. There are other conditions
which lead to heart disease, which also have a
fear of getting Alzheimers disease. Other
conditions which cause heart disease are high
blood pressure, diabetes, poor diet, high
    cholesterol, non-active lifestyle. Vascular
dementia can also lead to heart disease. This
results in narrowing blood vessels in the brain.
The narrowing of blood vessels leads to a
decrease in oxygen supply to the brain tissues.

  • 3.WOMEN HAVING A HIGHER RISK
  • Study reveals that almost twice the woman suffers
from Alzheimers disease than men. This disease
also worsens more quickly in women than in men.
Alzheimers disease causes brain shrinkage, which
is generally more severe in women than men.
Researchers suggest that brain changes in women
with these diseases may be some other reasons
    also.
  • 4.EDUCATION CAN LOWER THE RISK
  • More the education of people, lower the risk of
getting this disease. One should keep the brain
active in old age by involving in activities such
as taking classes, playing musical instruments,
    learning languages, doing group activities,
interacting with others, joining different clubs,
devoting time in worshipping and meditation and
many other activities. These activities may also
    lower risk.

  • 5.Loss of sense of smell
  • An individual with Alzheimers disease might lose
their sense of smell. Several studies suggest
that changes in the sense of smell might be a
reason for an early signal of Alzheimers
disease. It is important that the reason for the
loss of sense of smell may also be due to brain
injury, Parkinsons disease, and sinus infection.
  • 6.Varied life expectancy
  • Different individuals have different immunity
power, and so the growth of the disease also
varies. So it is very difficult to predict how
long an individual with Alzheimers disease will
live. Research says the elderly people live three
to four years with this disease. While younger
adults who are suffering from this disease may
live for ten years with this condition.

  • 7.ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE IS COSTLY
  • The high cost of the disease is challenging the
health system. Its occurrence among people is
increasing. Data suggest that this disease will
increase more. The expense of treating the
    disease continues to rise.
  • 8.NOT CURABLE
  • The Alzheimers Association states that this
disease is one of the main reasons for death
without having any methods for curing, preventing
or slowing it down. Researches for a vaccine
    continues.
  • But yet not no ways have been found to prevent
the disease from developing. The medication can
    only relieve some symptoms.

9
  • 9.CAREGIVERS EXPERIENCE HIGH STRAIN
  • Dementia patient needs immense support from
family, friends, or acquaintances. The caregiver
suffers stresses which include physical, mental,
emotional and at times, economical. The
caregivers also need support from the health
system, social and financial areas and legal
    system.
  • CONCLUSION
  • Dementia is not a single disease. It is an
overall disease that covers a good range of
    specific medical conditions, which includes
Alzheimers disease. The disease can be prevented
by eating healthy food, doing regular exercise,
    not smoking, etc.
