1
Preventing and Managing Complications Post
Bariatric Surgery
  • Bariatric Surgery Alone Does Not Guarantee Weight
Loss. Post-surgery Changes In Lifestyle, Activity
Levels, And Mindset Are Also Essential For The
Success Of The Procedure. In Addition, One Must
Also Focus On Not Contracting Infections And
Preventing Common Complications. Here Are Some
    Possible Medical Complications Post Bariatric
Surgery And Ways To Avoid Them.

2
Dumping Syndrome
  • Dumping syndrome is a condition wherein food
consumed is ingested and a load of carbohydrates
is quickly dumped into the small intestine. As a
result, there is a spike in insulin produced in
the body in addition to symptoms such as
    palpitations, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, and
    abdominal pain.
  • A simple way to avoid dumping syndrome is by
consuming a diet that is low on carbohydrates and
high in protein. Additionally, patients must
avoid consumption of liquids with their meals and
separate solids and liquids consumption by at
least 30 minutes. This helps prevent flushing out
of food through the gastric pouch before sending
    signals of satiety.

3
Constipation
  • Constipation is a common problem post any kind of
bariatric surgery. A definitive way of preventing
constipation for patients is by constantly
staying hydrated and eating fibrous foods with a
healthy serving of vegetables and fruits. Prune
juice and polyethylene glucose are laxative
options for patients post-bariatric surgery, upon
    consultation with their medical experts.

4
Medication Dosage Adjustment
  • After bariatric surgery in Fort Worth, most
patients experience a notable improvement in
    co-morbid conditions, such as diabetes,
hypertension, and dyslipidemia. In such cases,
the body may require less insulin and
    antihypertensive medications than otherwise.
  • It is advisable to engage in regular follow-ups
    with endocrinologists, diabetologists and other
specialists for medication to be altered from
time to time and prevent complications arising
    from over-dosage.

5
Marginal Ulcers
  • Ulcers are common post weight loss surgery due to
reflux, acidity and other gastric issues.
Patients are put on a proton pump inhibitor at
the time of discharge that must be used based on
the directive of the medical specialist. Avoiding
alcohol and spicy foods and chewing your food
helps fight the onset of ulcers.

6
Internal Hernia
  • An internal hernia occurs when an organ or part
of the bowel protrudes through a muscle tissue
into a region where it doesnt belong.
Complications surrounding hernia can be avoided
by not indulging in rigorous exercise soon after
    the surgery, preventing constipation and
consuming a healthy diet in moderation.
  • Patients must consult with their medical experts
and obtain a go-ahead for the same. Additionally,
women patients having undergone Bariatric Surgery
in Dallas TX, must adopt contraceptive methods
for two years post-surgery to ensure prevention
of any hernia and also ensure nutritional
    adequacy for childbearing.
