ORGANISATION OF INDIAN ARMY
- The present day Indian Army is one of the
foremost fighting armies of the world. - It is a thoroughly professional force that has
vast combat experience. - The organisation draws its customs, traditions,
ethos and basic character from the erstwhile
British Indian Army. - At the time of independence in 1947, due to
partition of India, the old Indian Army was also
divided. Since then, the Army has been constantly
re-organised and modernised to suit the peculiar
varied geographical and geo-political situation
of the nation. - The Army since independence has taken part in
the following major operations- - Kashmir Operations against Pakistan 1947-48.
- Sino-Indian Operations in NEFA (Arunachal) and
Ladakh 1962. - Indo-Pak war 1965.
- Indo-Pak war 1971.
- Sri Lanka 1987-1990 ( Operation Pawan)
- Kargil conflict 1999 ( Operation Vijay)

- Combat Formations are grouped as Corps, Divisions
and Brigades. These are commanded by an Officer
of the rank of Lieutenant General, Major General
and Brigadier respectively. - The Corps are further divided as Holding and
Strike Corps depending on their role. - A defence oriented Corps is the Holding Corps
whereas the Strike Corps is for offensive
operations. - The Corps Headquarters handles 3 to 5 divisions.
- The Army has its Order of Battle, Mountain
Divisions, Infantry Divisions, Armoured,
Artillery, and Mechanised Divisions, Independent
Brigade Groups and Brigades which may be
Armoured, Mechanised, Parachute, Engineers, Air
Defence, Field Artillery or Infantry/Mountain
Brigades.

11ARMOURED CORPS
ORGANISATION OF INDIAN ARMY
- The Armoured Corps is one of the combat arms of
the Indian Army. - Formed in 1947, it has battle tanks which provide
the mobility and fire power. - It currently consists of 63 armoured regiments
including the President's Bodyguards . - The basic role of armour is to destroy the enemy
by relentless, mobile offensive action, both in
offensive and defensive operations. - Armour is best suited for present day battle
field environment because of its mobility, fire
power protection and shock action. - An Armoured Regiment has 45 tanks.
- In India, we have Tank T-72, Tank T-90 and MBT
Arjun tanks.
12INFANTRY

- Infantry is the main combat arm, best arm suited
for close battle. - Its role is to close in with the enemy and
destroy him or capture his territory. - In Defence, they hold the ground against all
types of attack. - They also take part in counter insurgency and
counter terrorist operations. - Infantry also provides assistance in aid to civil
authorities when called for.
13MECHANIZED INFANTRY

- It is primarily Infantry with enhanced mobility
and fire power. - Mechanised Infantry moves in Armoured Personal
Carrier(APC) which has adequate protection
against small arms fire. - Their mobility in conjunction with Armour enables
own troops to obtain most favourable decision in
battle. - The emphasis is on mobility fire power and
manoeuvre rather than fire power.

- The Regiment of Artillery is the second largest
arm of the Indian Army, constituting nearly one
sixth of the Army's total strength. - Artillery provides heavy volume of fire at long
ranges to damage and destroy enemy position
before it can be physically captured and occupied
by own ground forces

- The Corps of Engineers consists of three groups
of combat engineers, namely the Madras Sappers,
the Bengal Sappers and the Bombay Sappers. - A group is roughly analogous to a regiment of
Indian Infantry, each group consisting of a
number of Engineer Regiments. - The Engineer Regiment is the basic
combat-engineer unit, analogous to an Infantry
Battalion.

- The Corps of Army Air Defence (abbreviated AAD)
is an active corps of the Indian Army, and a
major combat formation tasked with the air
defences of the country from foreign threats. - The Corps is responsible for the protection of
Indian air space from enemy aircraft and
missiles, especially those below 5,000 feet.

- The role of Army Aviation Corps is
reconnaissance and observation by controlling
artillery and Infantry mortar fire from air - Also to provide Commanders and Staff, rapid means
for liaison visit and recce. - It is ideally suited for evacuation of battle
casualities.

- Indian Army Corps of Signals is a corps and the
arm of the Indian Army which handles its military
communications. - It also monitors enemies communication systems.
- The Corps of Signals is also responsible for
cyber security. - Its vision is to achieve electronic and
information superiority for effective functioning
of the Army.

- Indian Army Service Corps (IASC) is a corps and
an arm of the Indian Army which handles
its logistic support function. - It is primarily responsible for provisioning,
procurement and distribution of Supplies, Fuels,
Oils and lubricants, hygiene chemicals and
miscellaneous items to Army, Air Force and
sometimes Navy also. - The operation of Transport and the provision of
Animal transport is also the responsibility of
ASC.

- It provides medical cover during operations as
well as in peace stations to troops and their
families.

- The Army Ordnance Corps (abbreviated as AOC) is
an active corps of the Indian Army and a major
formation responsible for providing material and
logistical support to the Indian Army during war
and peace. - The logistic function involves the provisioning
and procuring of all stores required for
operations and maintenance.

Engineers (EME)

- The Corps of Electronics and Mechanical
Engineers (EME) is an arms and service branch of
the Indian Army. - The Corps has varying responsibilities related to
the design, development, trial, inspection and
refit of weapon systems and equipment. - They also provide technical advice to units and
conduct recovery operations in peace and war. - The Corps also provides aid to civil authorities
in emergencies or natural calamities

- The Army Education Corps of India is a program
run by the Indian Army that develops soldiers and
officers of all ranks in a variety of
disciplines. The centre provides education in
both combat and non-combat operations.

- Corps of Military Police (CMP) is the military
police of the Indian Army. - Its role is to preserve good order and discipline
and to prevent breaches of the same by persons in
or attached to regular Army.
