2The Department of Indo- Pacific Languages and
Literatures is the largest
IPLL Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures
language-teaching unit at the
University of Hawaii. The 14
languages that we teach are
located primarily in the Pacific
and in Southeast Asia, but we also teach Hindi,
Sanskrit and
Arabic.

leadership inteaching Indo-Pacific Languages and
Literature research in languages, literature, and
cultures of the Indo-Pacific area, and community
service.

Indo-Pacific Languages, Literatures, and
Cultures, and facilitate the exchange and the
diffusion of such knowledge, to prepare students
to become knowledgeable about and competent in
Indo-Pacific Languages, Literatures, and

B.A. in Philippine Language and Literature
(concentration in Filipino or Ilokano) B.A. in
Interdisciplinary Studies (concentration in
Hindi, Indonesian, Samoan, Sanskrit, Thai, or

Khmer, Samoan, Sanskrit, Tahitian, Thai, or

6FEDERAL WORK STUDY The Department of Indo-Pacific
Languages and Literatures employs students who
have Federal Work Study (FWS) grants. The FWS is
a financial-aid based program that subsidizes a
portion of college expenses by offering
employment in career or community service
positions.

FILIPINO MAJOR/ MINOR SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarship grants are available to students who
are taking either a major or a minor in Filipino
under the BA Philippine Language and Literature
Program.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDIES
FELLOWSHIP Graduate and undergraduate students
of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures may
avail of the Foreign Language and Area Studies
Fellowship (FLAS). FLAS is a program under the
US Department of Education and administered at
UH Manoa by the Center for Southeast Asian
Studies (CSEAS) and the Center for Pacific
Islands Studies (CPIS).
FINANCIAL AID Several scholarships, grants, and
aid are available to UH Manoa students through
the Financial Aid Services Office.

8Ilokano Program Scholarships
J. Watumull Scholarship for Study in India
Scholarship grants are available to students who
are taking either a major or a minor in Ilokano
under the BA Philippine Language and Literature
Program.
The J. Watumull Scholarship supports students
who would like to take on an extended period of
study in India in any area such as the visual
and performing arts, history, philosophy,
religion and politics.

SAMUEL H. ELBERT GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
JACK HAVEN WARD GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
PACIFIC ASIAN SCHOLARSHIPS
The Samuel H. Elbert Graduate Scholarship is
available to UH graduate students to. pursue
graduate degrees (MA and PhD) through the the
study of Hawaiian and other Polynesian
languages. For details, please contact Prof.
John Mayer.
The Jack Haven Ward Graduate Scholarship is
available to UH graduate students who would like
to pursue graduate degrees (MA and PhD) through
the study of Tahitian and related French
Polynesian languages and Balinese. For details,

Scholarships and grants are available to
students undertaking Pacific and/or Asian
studies.

Study Abroad Programs Study Abroad Programs The
US Department of Education through the
Fulbright-Hays Program has awarded Study Abroad
Program grants to the Department of Indo-
Pacific Languages and Literatures for the
Cambodian, Filipino, Indonesian, Samoan, Thai,
and Vietnamese Language Programs.
Other Student Funding Opportunities There are
many other student funding opportunities, such
as the David L. Boren Graduate Fellowship, which
are available especially for less commonly
taught languages (LCTL). Dr. Yuphaphann
