1
George Pegios - Preparation for a dental implant
  • The planning process for dental implants can
involve a variety of specialists, including a
doctor who specializes in conditions of the
mouth, jaw, and face (maxillofacial and oral
surgeon), a dentist who specializes in the
treatment of supporting structures for teeth,
such as gums and bones (periodontist), a dentist
who designs and implants artificial teeth
(prosthetist), or occasionally a nose, throat,
    and ear specialist (otolaryngologist).
  • George Pegios -Because dental implants require
one or more surgical procedures, you must undergo
a thorough evaluation to prepare for the process,
    which includes

2
  • Comprehensive dental exam. You may have dental
x-rays and 3D images, and models of your teeth
    and jaw.
  • Review of your medical history. Tell your
doctor if you have any medical conditions and if
you are taking medications, including supplements
    and prescription and over-the-counter
medications. If you have heart disease or
orthopedic implants, your doctor may prescribe
antibiotics before surgery to prevent infections.
  • Treatment plan. Created based on your
situation, this plan takes into account factors
such as the number of teeth to be replaced and
the condition of the jaw and remaining teeth.
  • To control pain, anesthesia options during
surgery are local anesthesia, sedation, or
general anesthesia. Check with your dental
specialist to find out which option is best for
    you.

3
  • George Pegios says that the dental care team will
tell you what to eat and drink before surgery,
depending on the type of anesthesia you will
    receive.
  • If they use sedation or general anesthesia,
arrange for someone to take you home after
surgery and assume that you will rest the rest of
    the day.
  • George Pegios -What can you expect from dental
    implant surgery
  • In general, dental implant surgery is an
outpatient surgery performed in stages, with
    healing time between procedures.

4
  • The process of placing a dental implant involves
    multiple steps, including
  • Extraction of the damaged tooth
  • Preparation of the jaw (graft), when necessary
  • Placement of the dental implant
  • Growth and healing of bone
  • Placement of the abutment
  • Placement of the artificial tooth
  • The entire process can take many months from
start to finish. Much of that time is spent
healing and waiting for new bone growth in the
    jaw.
  • George Pegios - Depending on your situation, the
specific procedure performed, or the materials
used, certain steps can sometimes be combined.
