With its headquarters in Mumbai, Shipping
Corporation of India is the Indian
government-owned public sector enterprise
operating and managing vessels to service both
National and International trades. SCI being
Indias premier shipping line operates around
one-third of the Indian tonnage. Established on 2
October 1961, SCI today has evolved to be the
largest Indian shipping company.
Starting as a marginal liner company with just 19
vessels, SCI changed to be the lifeline of the
nation ensuring continued and uninterrupted
supply of crude oil, driving the economy. The
presence of modern, young, and diversified fleet
with trained and experienced manpower has
enhanced SCIs growth.
The government awarded the prestigious Navratna
status to Shipping Corporation of India in 2008.
A slew of innovative strategies delivered an
enhanced graph of profitability. Shipping
Corporation of India is the only shipping company
to deliver overseas Liner Break-bulk services to
the Indian trade. Emerging as a world-class
international shipping company, SCI delivers a
wide range of services for the overseas trade.

Evolved to be the largest tanker owner in India,
SCI has a well-diversified fleet of crude oil
tankers. SCI delivers a wide range of tankers
consisting of sizes MR, LR-I, LR-II, Aframax,
Suezmax, and VLCC Tankers, serving the enhanced
growth of the Indian oil industry. In synergy
with refiners, SCI deploys the tankers for the
coastal movement of petroleum products. It
ensures a uniform supply of clean petroleum
products to the end-user through the public
distribution system.

With an assortment of 15 bulk carriers, SCI has
turned out to be the major bulk carrier operator
in India. Transporting mainly raw materials and
semi-finished goods, the vessels are mainly
ordered for India centric trade. Carrying a wide
range of cargo like coal, coke, grain, steel
products, plywood, iron ore, fertilizer, bauxite
the vessels are used for cross-trading across the
world.

Forming the largest segment in LPS Division,
container services deliver worldwide coverage to
the containerized cargoes across the Indian
Sub-continent. SCI delivers space charter
arrangements based on containerized vessels along
with break-bulk vessels of a wide range of Main
Line Operators.

Delivering vital offshore marine logistics, SCI
supports the Indian oil industry in its
indigenous oil exploration accomplishments. SCI
ensures operations, manning, maintenance, and
management (OM) services of the Well Stimulation
Vessel, multi-support vessel, diving support
vessel, geotechnical vessel, offshore supply
vessels, and mobile offshore drilling units to
the oil exploration companies.

overseas liner-break services to the Indian trade
based on space charter from regions across the
world. Break bulk shipping involves transporting
large cargo in smaller units like pallets,
barrels, drums, boxes, or bags. Currently, break
bulk shipping is used frequently to transport
heavy goods like oil and gas, petrochemical,
energy, marine, and mining.

While serving the international trade, SCI on
behalf of the Indian government operates and
manages 27 domestic passenger and cargo
transportation services amid the Mainland-
Andaman Nicobar group of islands inter-island
vessels.

Chartering is the most commonly used term in the
shipping industry and is corporate in nature. The
chartering department meets the SCI requirements
related to in/out chartering for a variety of
ships.

SCI - A pioneer of lighterage operations in
India. In 1975, dedicated lighterage cell
acquired the necessary equipment and conducted
sea Ship-to-Ship (STS) lighterage operations on
the Indian coast. Lighterage operations transfer
the wet and dry cargoes between ships of varying
sizes.

Dry docking is popularly used when a ship is
taken to the service yard for repair. The process
comprises of cleaning and inspecting the
submerged portions of the hull by taking the ship
to the dry land. Dry docking is usually done
every 12 months to 24 months to ensure the
repairing and replacement of the defective systems
