How Long Do Porcelain Crowns Last
2
  • A porcelain crown is more like a natural tooth
but with a hollow space within it like a dental
cap and must be worn over the affected tooth. It
entirely covers the portion of the affected tooth
and can last for many years if properly cared
    for.
  • On average, porcelain crowns can last between 5
to 15 years. But the longevity of your full
porcelain crown is determined by your personal
lifestyles and mouth-related habits, the oral
hygiene practices you followed, and the amount of
wear and tear the dental crown can take.
  • Normally, daily wear will cause the permanent
porcelain crowns to weaken and wear off, but
certain lifestyles can accelerate the process. To
make your dental crown last longer, you must
avoid unhealthy lifestyles, such as teeth
clenching or grinding, using your teeth as a tool
or to open packaging, biting fingernails, and
chewing on hard objects such as ice, pen caps or
    nut, etc.
  • These unhealthy lifestyles only exert excessive
pressure on the full porcelain crowns causing its
    lifespan to be shortened.

3
The following tips will help you to extend the
lifespan of your full porcelain crown
  • Avoid biting your fingernails, chewing on hard
objects like hard candy or ice. Doing this would
not only cause damages to your porcelain crowns
but also to your natural teeth.
  • Always observe good and proper dental hygiene
practices, such as brushing your teeth thrice
daily and flossing twice daily. When you brush,
pay careful attention to the areas around the
dental crowns, especially the gumline. This will
keep food chunks and plaques, which may cause
dental decay, away from under the dental crown.

4
  • Avoid grinding or clenching your teeth. Doing
this will cause your full porcelain crowns to
crack or chip. If you naturally suffer from
bruxism (unconscious grinding or clenching of the
teeth), it is recommended that you make use of a
bespoke mouth guard. Doing this will help with
protecting your full porcelain crowns and also
    your natural teeth.
  • Schedule a regular visit to your dentist for
dental checkup and cleaning appointments. During
these visits, your full permanent porcelain
crowns would be examined by your dentist for any
signs of a dental cavity, gapping between the
dental crown and natural teeth, trauma, or decay.
