The Evolution of the Modest Living Room Bean Bag
  • Bean bags have been around for decades starting
life as a stylish and hip piece of furniture in
many 1960s living rooms. They then went on to
become cheap material bags with a handle and full
of tiny foam beans for the kids to play with or
sit on while they were watching TV in the 1980s.
But, they have done a full circle and now bean
bags are again a stylish piece of interior
design. But, they are also very functional pieces
of furniture that comes in all shapes and sizes
and with all sorts of different covers and
fillings, and for every age group. Bean bags are
often funky design features in trendy cafes and
    bars these days.

4
Where do bean bags originate from?
  • Todays bean bags are influenced by three Italian
designers back in the sixties. Gatti, Paolini and
Teodora worked for Zanotta Design and created a
trendy, hip, stylish and comfortable chair that
was a 60s and 70s must have the very first bean
bag chairs. Their work can now be found in 25
    museums around the world.

5
What are bean bags stuffed with?
  • Some bean bags are filled with the traditional
expanded polystyrene beans (EPS). These beans are
a bit like memory foam mattresses, hug the shape
of your body and leave an indentation of your
body when you get up out of them. But they are
individual beans all packed in together to give
this effect. EPS is not biodegradable, but there
are lots of ways that it can be recycled to
ensure you being as environmentally friendly as
possible. Or some people use them for arts and
    crafts.

6
  • Some of the newest bean bag chairs are actually
made of compressed foam, which is known as memory
foam. This is a form of polyurethane that is
produced in a very particular way to make sure it
is thick and dense to create the memory foam
    effect.

7
  • In years gone by, plastic wasnt available and
bean bags were literally stuffed with beans,
    dried grain, rice or corn.
  •
  • There are also expanded polypropylene (EPP)
beans. These are more common in Asia than in the
US or Europe. They are durable and return to
their original shape really quickly after they
have been compressed out of shape by people
    sitting on them.

8
What About Bean Bag Safety?
  • Bean bags look amazing and are super comfy, but
they also need to make sure they follow strict
modern-day health and safety regulations. Some
safety precautions include bags being made with
double stitching to prevent them from bursting
and zippers with removable handles, so children
cant open them up and get their hands on the
tiny beans and risk choking on them.

9
How long do they last?
  • It really depends how much they are used as to
how long they last. If the kids are using them as
trampolines and toys, then they might not last as
long as those that are used for more adult
leisurely use or decorative piece of furniture.
They should last around three to four years
before the beans are worn out.

10
What are the different sorts of bean bags
available?
  • There are bean bags shaped as seats or chairs
that can be used to watch TV or sit at a table or
desk, and they are also really popular with
gamers. Other bean bags might be the traditional
teardrop shape with a handle. Others are six to
eight feet long for several people to sprawl on.
Then there are lounger shaped bean bag chairs
that are great for sitting back and reading a
    book or a magazine.

11
  • Or there is the sack. A huge sack of beans at can
be sat on every which way, just sinking into the
huge bag of beans. And then there is the large,
flat and square version that you can lie on with
a book or just chilling in the house or garden. A
small bean bag would make a fantastic footstool.
But, you can also get a bean bag ottoman.
Children often love novelty bean bags. You can
get them with their favorite cartoon characters
on or shaped as a bird, or dinosaur or animal.

12
  • Then as well as the shape, there is the color or
material to consider. Bean bag chairs can be
found in every color, every combination of color
and every pattern you can think of. You can
choose from faux leather, faux fur, velvet or
cotton you name it and you can find a bean bag
to suit your taste and décor.

13
What sizes are bean bag chairs?
  • Childrens bean bags are usually 110 to 120
inches in circumference, which would be good for
anyone under four and a half feet. Bean bags that
are made especially for teenagers are usually 140
to 150 inches in circumference, which would be
good for youngsters up to the five foot three
inches. Adult bean bags would be around 180
inches in circumference and would easily
accommodate someone up to six foot tall.
