Safety Tips for Sharing the Road with Semi Trucks
2
As a driver, it is your responsibility to share
the road with other vehicles, as well as to
protect yourself and everyone around. It is your
duty of care to ensure that you are obeying the
traffic laws, driving respectfully and not
putting anyone in danger. A lot of people never
really learn how to properly share the road with
other drivers. Here are some safety tips every
driver should be aware of, especially when
sharing the road with semi trucks.
3
Be Defensive
While driving among big trucks or in the jammed
traffic, it is important to keep a safe distance
and speed. As a driver, you probably feel
comfortable operating your vehicle at any time.
Even so, your skill and experience will not do
you any good if you are not focused and alert at
all times. Semi Trucks are very large and are
usually bigger in size than regular trucks, which
makes them way slower and a lot more dangerous.
It will take them more time to react to the
traffic and avoid a collision.

If you end up in a truck accident, be sure to get
in touch with Los Angeles truck accident
attorneys as quickly as possible. Schedule a
consultation and receive an immediate case
evaluation so that you can file a claim against
the party responsible for causing the accident
and obtain compensation for your

Maintain Your Distance
It is crucial to stay away from big trucks as
they may start slowing down at any point. Driving
close to a semi will put you at great risk of
being injured by sudden stops or tire blowouts.
If you are in front of a semi, in case you are
being tailgated, either let them pass by moving
aside or speed up and gain some
distance. Practice a four-second following
distance between you and the last trailer, and
you will have enough time to react in case of an
emergency stoppage.
6
Be Quick
If you plan on passing a semi, be sure to do it
quickly. Normally they will keep on driving and
will not reduce their speed at any time. Practice
safe passing and try and get as close as possible
to the other side of the road, rather than the
semi truck. Do not linger instead, push the
pedal to the metal.
7
The worst mistake that a driver can make is
cutting other drivers off. Before you do that to
a semi truck, keep in mind that the truck
requires at least 200 yards to come to a full
stop when driving at around 65 miles an hour. If
there is not enough road for them to stop, the
semi might end up causing an accident or even a
multi-vehicle collision. In some cases, the
trailer may jackknife, or even worse, cause the
whole truck to roll over.
Never Cut a Semi Truck
