How to Set Up a Chess Board
2
Chess is an ancient game that is played by two
people. Still, now people love and enjoy playing
chess. It is a board game with 24 squares
arranged in an 88 grid. Millions of people play
chess around the globe. Chess is driven from an
Indian game called Chaturanga which was played in
the 7th century. This game has only a few rules
but still, it can become remarkably complex.
Setting up a chessboard is an easy task and
learning the rules of how to play is not
difficult. Here is a chess tactics guide on how
to set up the chessboard.
3
The chessboard is arranged in such a way that on
both sides of players the bottom right corner is
in white color. Both sides of the board should
look identical to the players perspective. Set
Up the pieces on a horizontal row closer to you
on both sides of the board. The important pieces
will be arranged in the first row and the pawns
in the second. Every single square of the board
is used in the game.
Set the board to make bottom right square white
4
Start arranging your chessboard by placing the
rooks on each side of your corner. Rooks are the
tall pieces on the chess boards that move
horizontally and vertically in a straight line.
Place a rook, on each side of your corners
5
In the game of chess, knights look like horses
and they are placed next to the rooks on right
and left side respectively. In the game, knights
move in an L shape with 3 squares. The first two
squares knight will move in one direction and the
3rd square in another direction. Knights never
move diagonally. They just move along the ranks
and fields. Another move that a knight can make
is they can jump over the pieces to make their
way and move, it is the only piece on the
chessboard which is allowed to make this move.
Along with this, it is the only piece on the
board that doesnt move in a straight line.
Place the knights to the inside of the rooks
6
Bishops are tall and round-topped that are placed
next to knights on right and left side
respectively. Bishops can only move in the
diagonal direction. The left bishop will be
placed at the black square and always remain on
black squares. Whereas the right bishop is
placed at the white square and always moves on
the white square.
Place the bishops to the inside of the knights
7
If you are playing white then your queen will be
placed on the remaining white square on the same
line in the middle and if you are playing black
then your queen goes on the black square. In the
middle on the same line, the queen is the tallest
piece in the game and has a crown on the head.
She can move in any direction with any number of
spaces i.e. horizontally, vertically, diagonally.
She is the most powerful piece on the chessboard.
Place the queen on the remaining matching-color
square in the same line.
8
The king is the second tallest piece on the board
and seems to appear around the crown on his head.
The king can move in any direction but he can
move only one space at one time. The whole game
is about protecting the king. Once the king is
lost the game ends there.
Place the king on the last vacant square
9
After placing all the important pieces in the
first-row place the pawns along with it in the
second row. Pawns are like a protective wall
whose aim is to protect the major pieces. Pawns
can move forward one square at one time but they
can make many other special moves.
Place the pawns on the second row.
