2What is Plantar Fasciitis
3Causes
The most common cause of plantar fasciitis is
overuse, followed by acute injury to the plantar
fascia. Other causes include
01
04
Wearing footwear that does not provide proper
support
Bone spur on the heel
02
05
Regularly running, jogging, or walking for long
distances
High-impact exercise such as basketball,
gymnastics, and dance
03
06
Standing on your feet for long periods
Flat feet or high arches
4Symptoms
The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is
sharp pain in the heel. Typically, the pain is
most noticeable when getting out of bed in the
morning or standing after sitting down for a long
period of time.
Pain usually improves with rest. However, some
patients experience pain throughout the day, even
when not using the affected foot.
5Treatment
01
Medication Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs) can reduce inflammation of the plantar
fascia and minimize pain.
02
Steroid injection If the pain doesn't respond to
prescribed NSAIDs or is extremely severe or, a
steroid injection is an option.
03
Physical therapy A physical therapist will
implement exercises that stretch and strengthen
the plantar fascia, and may also
use massage, contrast baths, or ultrasonography
to help with long-term healing.
6Treatment
04
06
Radial pressure wave therapy Also referred to as
shockwave therapy, this medical treatment
utilizes ultrasound technology to send
high-energy acoustic waves into the heel to
stimulate the bodys natural healing abilities.
Custom Orthotics Clinical studies and research
have shown an improvement in function and a
decrease in pain with the use of custom shoe
inserts.
05
07
Stretches Standing calf stretches, rolling
stretch, stretching the plantar fascia, foot
flexes, toe curls, and marble pickups.
Surgery The majority of patients will not need
surgery, but surgery may be recommended for
severe or problematic cases.

8Conclusion
If you or a family member is suffering from
stabbing heel pain, it might be the result of
plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of a thick
band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the
toes.
