Foot Binding

  • The art of foot binding was practiced in China
for over 1000 years. This was practiced at first
only in the upper class but soon spread to every
    social class in China..
  • Foot binding began in the late Tang Dynasty (618
    906) and it gradually spread through the upper
class during the Song Dynasty (960 1297).
During the Ming period (1368 1644) the custom
of foot binding was finally outlawed in the 1911
    Revolution of Sun Yat-Sen.

4
Process
  • ????Started on girls between the ages 5 and 7,
    but was
  • occasionally started as early as 3 or 4
    and as late as 9.
  • ????Women, mainly the mother or the mother figure
    did the
  • actual binding.
  • ????A special day was chosen for the first day of
    the binding
  • (sometimes the girls birthday but more
    than likely set
  • late in the fall or winter, so the foot
    would be numb and
  • the pain would not be as severe)
  • ????The feet were first soaked in warm water or
    animal blood
  • and herbs.
  • ????The feet then were sometimes covered in alum
    (to help
  • cover the stench of the rotting flesh
    and also to help
  • keep the feet dry)
  • ????The toenails were cut very short so they did
    not cut into
  • the foot as it was being reshaped.

5
Reasoning behind foot binding
  • ????women were forced to depend on men for
    everything
  • ????women could not leave the home, therefore
they were more of objects of possession and not
wives to love as another human being, it became a
    symbol of chastity.

6
Being Held Back
  • This stopped women from having any type of life
outside of their home. They couldnt walk any
distances on their feet so they were stuck in
    their houses.
  • Any women in the upper class society was banished
or even killed if they did not have their feet
    bound.
  • If a girl did not have bound feet they were
    considered unsuitable for marriage.

7
The pain caused was horrible and many times
caused infections like gangrene leaded death.
8
This process destroyed childhoods by not letting
children have fun. They were unable to play or
run around because of the excruciating pain that
was caused.
9
  • These are the shoes of a person with bound feet
compared to normal size shoes. These shoes called
lotus shoes or lily shoes were only about 3-4
inches long and only about 1 ½-2 inches wide.
