1
Evaluation of the Cancer diet according to Budwig
Center Germany
2
  • In her nutritional concept, Budwig refers to the
Warburg hypothesis of Nobel Prize winner Otto
Warburg. Budwig assumes that a deficiency in
    polyunsaturated, essential fatty acids is
responsible for the development of cancer. For
this reason, she recommends a high-fat diet for
patients, consisting mainly of linseed oil (rich
in alpha-linolenic acid) and quark (source of
    protein).

3
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables are other essential
components of this cancer diet, while meat and
luxury foods (e.g. alcohol) should be avoided.

4
Budwig Center Diet
  • The nutritional recommendations from Dr. Johanna
Budwig Center Germany are based on the following
theory Polyunsaturated fatty acids have a
cancer-inhibiting effect, as they activate the
cellular respiration of cancer cells. The fatty
acids allegedly contribute to the death of cancer
cells. However, this assumption cannot be
    scientifically proven.

5
  • To compensate for a deficiency in polyunsaturated
fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic
acid), the Budwig diet focuses on linseed oil. It
contains a high percentage of alpha-linolenic
acid. Quark also plays an important role. It is
supposed to provide the body with protein, while
meat and fish are not on the menu.

6
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables are also among the
recommended foods, which should ideally be
natural and seasonal. You should also avoid
luxury foods such as coffee, sugar, or alcohol as
well as white flour and heavily processed grain
products. The positive thing about this diet is
that it does not contain any ready-made products
or trans fatty acids, but prohibits some food
    groups.

7
Evaluation of the Cancer Diet
  • The cancer diet is based on the assumption that
    polyunsaturated fatty acids have a
cancer-inhibiting effect. This assumption is not
scientifically tenable, since there are both
    anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and
anti-inflammatory and thus at least theoretically
    cancer-promoting omega-6 fatty acids.

8
  • There is a lack of scientific data that proves a
positive effect of the Budwig oil-protein diet in
cancer therapy. However, the avoidance of
finished products and its focus on a diet with
unprocessed foods should be rated positively with
this diet. Due to the insufficient data on the
one hand and the refuted basic assumption on
which the Budwig diet is based, its use for the
prevention and treatment of cancer cannot be
    recommended.
