  • The last few months of living in Brussels, the
capital of the European Union, have been an
fascinating time. Outside, the financial economy
appeared to be staggering from recession to
disaster in the modern world and then back again.
Our most respectable banks crumbled to ashes,
worldwide securities went through a hair-raising
    nosedive, big corporations were virtually
bankrupt, hundreds of thousands lost their jobs,
and the worse was expected by millions of others.

    news.
  • Although you would hardly have realised it in the
Brussels bubble. Of course, on our big,
flat-screen TVs, we could track the
    entertainingly gory financial Armageddon
unfolding, but it was more like seeing a new,
    star-studded, blockbuster disaster film than
anything that was really occurring. As the world
economy was tumbling on the edge of the brink,
    the European Parliament passionately discussed
topics such as new timeshare regulations, the
Tropical Timber Deal, the European Internet Music
    Distribution Authorization, the Unique Mountain
Farming Policy, human rights in Vietnam, and
whether the 'European Year of Imagination and
Innovation' should be proclaimed in 2010.
  • And as we were watching in dismay while our
investments and pensions appeared to evaporate
before our eyes, the European Commission released
more than ten new laws a day covering any
possible sector of our lives, including
increasing customs duty to increase the price of
    several manufactured foods, forcing
slaughterhouses to hire a full-time worker in the
last few minutes to take charge of the safety of
    animals

  • Then the Brussels Euro-elite proceeded to go to
    luxurious champagne-fuelled receptions in the
evenings, as if untouched by the financial
crisis, after their busy days discussing heavy
subjects and making new rules, before taking
taxis to highly rated restaurants to feed
themselves at the expense of taxpayers proceeded
to flit from city to city to hold crucial
meetings continued to travel around the
taxpayers' expense. Have a look at British
airways crisis news to get more info on this.
  • Because of us or despite us?
  • This might sound like an unreasonable point of
    discussion contrasting our euro leaders
    'luxurious, comfortable lifestyle with the
concerns and struggles that some of us may face
due to the recent financial crisis yet it does
indicate that there might be a growing
    discrepancy between the Eurocrats' high-paying,
low-tax, healthy lives and the fact that the
majority of us have to wake up every morning.
This the inequality could also cause European
taxpayers to begin to question if the euro-elite,
the citizens who pay their lavish wages, pensions
and expenditures, work for us, or if we work for
them to ensure their continued security and
    well-being.

  • The EU and its backers claim that their vision
for a Europe that is much more unified has given
us many advantages. They claim that the EU has
played an significant political role both in
preserving peace in Europe after decades of
conflict and in establishing a base of unity for
prosperity and independence on the continent,
first for countries emerging from dictatorships
such as Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain (often
referred to colloquially as the PIGS) and then
for those escaping Communism, the PIGS. They
maintain that the internal economy of the EU has
    broken boundaries, empowering citizens and
products to pass easily, stimulating economic
development and stability. And they are persuaded
that the EU 's agricultural, market and
environmental policies have managed to provide us
with high-quality produce, healthy goods and
healthier air and water. You can learn more at
    brussels this morning.
  • The acts, morals and course of the European
adventure, however, are starting to be debated by
many other citizens. They say that it is NATO,
the danger of Soviet aggression during the Cold
War and the rise of independence that has
sustained stability in Europe, rather than the
EU. They refer to the endless stream of instances
of EU greed, over-regulation, anonymity and
bribery to show that an unaccountable, inept,
unethical, self-serving hierarchy rules us. And
others also identify with the opinion (generally
credited to former Soviet leader Mikhail
Gorbachev) that we are, maybe inadvertently,'
re-creating the Western European Soviet Union.'
