2 Knee replacement surgery
If your knee is severely damaged by arthritis or
injury, it may be hard for you to perform simple
activities, such as walking or climbing stairs.
You may even begin to feel pain while you are
sitting or lying down.
If nonsurgical treatments like medications and
using walking supports are no longer helpful, you
may want to consider total knee replacement
surgery. Joint replacement surgery is a safe and
effective procedure to relieve pain, correct leg
deformity, and help you resume normal activities.
Knee replacement, also known as knee
arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace
the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to
relieve pain and disability. It is most commonly
performed for osteoarthritis,1 and also for
other knee diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis
and psoriatic arthritis. In patients with severe
deformity from advanced rheumatoid arthritis,
trauma, or long-standing osteoarthritis, the
surgery may be more complicated and carry higher
risk. Osteoporosis does not typically cause knee
pain, deformity, or inflammation and is not a
reason to perform knee replacement.
3Risks by knee replacement surgery -
Knee replacement surgery, like any surgery,
carries risks. They include
- Infection
- Blood clots in the leg vein or lungs
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Nerve damage
Total knee replacement -
Patients with severe destruction of the knee
joint associated with progressive pain and
impaired function maybe candidates for total knee
replacement.
4- Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for knee
replacement operation . - Physical therapy is an essential part of
rehabilitation after total knee replacement. - Patients with artificial joints are recommended
to take antibiotics before, during, and after
surgery. - Total knee replacements require surgery to
implant artificial knee joints.
5What is a total knee replacement ?
A total knee replacement is a surgical procedure
whereby the diseased knee joint is replaced with
artificial material. The knee is a hinge joint
that provides motion at the point where the thigh
meets the lower leg. The thighbone (or femur)
abuts the large bone of the lower leg (tibia) at
the knee joint.
6During a total knee replacement, the end of the
femur bone is removed and replaced with a metal
shell. The end of the lower leg bone (tibia) is
also removed and replaced with a channeled
plastic piece with a metal stem. Depending on the
condition of the kneecap portion of the knee
joint, a plastic button may also be added under
the kneecap surface. The artificial components of
a total knee replacement are referred to as the
prosthesis.
7The posterior cruciate ligament is a tissue that
normally stabilizes each side of the knee joint
so that the lower leg cannot slide backward in
relation to the thighbone. In total knee
replacement surgery, this ligament is either
retained, sacrificed, or substituted by a
polyethylene post. Each of these various designs
of total knee replacement has its own particular
benefits and risks.
