The second mate onboard a vessel, also called the
second officer, is next in command to the First
Mate, and is responsible for the safe and
efficient voyage of the ship. He serves as a
safety officer, shore excursion and fishing
guide, and performs periodical general deck
duties under the supervision of the First Mate.
His responsibilities include safe navigation,
conducting excursions for persons onboard, and
coordinating the ship's activities efficiently
with the First Mate. Procuring a Second Mate (FG)
Competency Course certification augments an
individual's profile and open up a plethora of
opportunities in maritime work.

According to one of India's largest job search
websites, the average pay of a second officer
ranges from Rs. 3 Lakhs to Rs. 6 Lakhs per month.
There is also the added advantage of being able
to work across various industries associated with
sea travel. AMET CITY COLLEGE, run under the

AMET is currently offering a Second Mate (FG)
Competency Course at their institution. Taught
over a period of 120 days, the course costs Rs.
32,000. To be eligible, a student must hold a
graduation in a Pre-Sea Deck Cadet Course with
DLP and 18 months of sea service. A high school
graduate with a Pre-Sea Deck Cadet Course
certification with DLP or NWKO (NCV) and 36
months of sea service with a 2M foundation
certificate can also apply.
