The Story
KORITE IS THE LARGEST, MOST TRUSTED SOURCE FOR
THE WORLDS FINEST AMMOLITE.
Founded from a passion for paleontology and an
entrepreneurial spirit in 1979 Rene Vandervelde
purchased a young business from the Kormos
family and named it Korite. Renes vision was to
introduce the world to the beautiful and
captivating Ammolite. Discovered in 1906 by the
Geological Survey of Canada, Rene had heard of
Ammolite and was fascinated by its history,
rarity and cultural significance. Indigenous
Canadians refer to Ammolite as the Buffalo
Stone, others refer to Ammolite as the Energy
Stone or Spirit Stone. Ammolite comes from
the fossilization of Ammonite Cephalopods, which
are found around the world yet, only in the
Bearpaw Formation of Southern Alberta did they
mineralize and become the rare and colourful
gemstone.

From its beginnings in 1979, Korite has grown in
operations, exposure and appeal. In 1981,
Ammolite was officially designated a
precious governing
gemstone body
by CIBJO for precious
(World stone
categorization). Korite Ammolite is the last of
the gemstones accepted in the past 300 years and
amongst the rarest, placing it alongside its
peers Opal, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
