Arthritis is severe disease which occurs when
there is cartilage loss in a joint. These occur
mostly on Hips and Knees. Dr Morton is a
specialize in Hip and Knee Arthritis surgeries
and Nonoperative treatments.
A knee or hip replacement surgery has made the
life of many people happier and painless.
However, sometimes, people may need a second
replacement surgery as well, known as Revision
Surgery.

The Need for a New Artificial Joint
  • The need for a new artificial joint or
revision surgery can arise after some wear and
tear of the initial joint replacement causing the
loosening of the replacement. This loosening may
lead to bone damage or loss, escorted by pain.
Lets go through a few more reasons for the
    revision surgery.
  • Infection
  • This is a major cause of joint failure.
Implants containing metal or plastic are more
prone to bacteria, leading to infection. This may
lead to pain and swelling in the joint, requiring
    revision surgery.

  • Dislocation
  • Under some circumstances, the implant may
shift out of its initial or normal position. This
is called dislocation of the joint leading to
various problems such as a fracture, loosening,
or scar tissue. This might also happen in obese
patients as they put more strain on their joints,
causing the loosening of the artificial joint.
Additionally, young patients are more active that
puts more stress on the artificial joint leading
to the need for revision surgery.
