Why High-Capacity, Low-Sag ACCC Conductor Offers
a Better Solution than ACSS

Introduction
  • CTC Global is an ACCC conductor
manufacturing company that was founded to
develop, certify and deploy advanced technologies
to improve the efficiency, capacity, reliability
and resiliency of the electric power grid.
  • Our primary product is high-capacity, low-sag
    CTC Global ACCC Conductor solutions.

The globally-patented and trademark-registered
ACCC conductor
  • CTC began the development of the ACCC conductor
in an effort to increase the capacity of
    congested transmission lines that were
    constrained due to thermal sag.
  • Essentially, CTC Global recognized the numerous
advantages of carbon fiber composite materials
and developed and rigorously tested a
composite core that is about 50 stronger and 70
lighter than steel with a coefficient of thermal
expansion about 90 less than steel it does not
    sag like steel when hot.

About the added aluminum content
  • The added aluminum content and quality increase
the conductors ampacity  or current carrying
capability  to about twice that of a
conventional conductor, as well as significantly
reducing line losses compared to any other
conductor on the market today.  Line loss
reductions can range from 25 to 40 or more
depending on load level. The improved efficiency
of the ACCC conductor along with its ability to
carry twice the current of a conventional
conductor- without excessive sag  offers huge
    advantages.

Increased strength, greatly reduced thermal
sag
  • ACCC Conductor, on the other hand, offers
increased strength (41,200 pounds for Drake
size), and, more importantly, greatly reduced
thermal sag. This means that the capacity of an
existing ACSR line can be doubled by upgrading to
ACCC without the need to replace or modify
    existing structures.
  • Other performance / durability benefits of ACCC
compared to ACSR or ACSS is that ACCC offers
greatly improved corrosion resistance as well as
resistance to fretting failure and cyclic load
fatigue caused by Aeolian Vibration and thermal
    cycling.
  • Finally, and with great significance, the ACCC
conductors lighter weight composite core allows
the incorporation of 28 percent more aluminum
    (using compact trapezoidal shaped strands),
without a weight or diameter penalty. The added
    aluminum content and reduced electrical
resistance allows the ACCC conductor to reduce
line losses between 25 and 40 percent compared to
equally sized ACSR / ACSS conductors.

The lowest cost solution
  • Reduced line losses serves to reduce operating
costs, fuel consumption (and associated GHG /
CO2 emissions) while also freeing up generation
    capacity that is otherwise wasted.
  • When upfront capital costs, maintenance costs and
life cycle costs are considered, ACCC conductor
blows away the competition and offers the lowest
    cost solution, by far.
