  • What is Auricular Perichondritis?
  • Auricular perichondritis is an infection in the
outer part of the ear cartilage made of
    connective tissue, called Auricle perichondrium
(pinna). The infection may be severe, causing a
permanent change in the earlobe structure, also
    called cauliflower ear.
  • Symptoms

any of the following symptoms in your earlobes

  • Rashes
  • Mild to severe pain
  • Distortion of its shape due to swelling
  • Fluid (pus) discharge from the pinna

  • In very severe cases, the following will be the
    symptoms

  • Cauliflower ear
  • Middle ear infection
  • Loss of hearing
  • Tinnitus ( a sizzling ringing sound in the ear)
  • Problems in maintaining balance
  • Vertigo

  • What Are The Causes Of Auricular Perichondritis?
  • The disease is caused due to infection whose
    underlying causes can be as
  • Burns in the earlobe
  • Injury due to sports
  • Injury due to cuts and wounds
  • Boils on-ear
  • Inadequate treatment of swimmers ear
  • Injury in the head affecting the ears
  • Acupuncture-led injury
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Trauma due to ear surgery

  • Treatments
  • Its treatment depends on the physical examination
of the ears, and the extent of infection caused.
    The treatments include
  • Prescription of Antibiotics- For treating
perichondritis, the ENT doctor may prescribe oral
    antibiotics and corticosteroids to reduce
inflammation. Depending on the extent of the
infection, the doctor may administer intravenous
fluids. Auricular perichondritis may be caused
due to auto-immuno disease. In such cases,
steroids are administered to suppress pain and
    inflammation.
  • Removal of foreign objects- Infections can also
be caused due to allergy to materials like studs
or fancy earrings or wrong piercing. The doctor
will remove the foreign object to treat the ear.
  • Fomentation or warm press- If there are no cuts
in the perichondrium and the lobe is inflamed due
to the puss in it, fomentation or warm press can
    give relief.
  • Surgical drainage- The ENT doctor can opt for a
surgical drainage treatment to drain the puss
accumulated in the lobe, causing a lot of pain
and inconvenience. The doctor will make incisions
in the site to drain the pus and apply
medications to it, followed by sutures.
  • Painkillers- The doctor can prescribe them to
relieve pain and redness due to perichondritis.
Painkillers can also be administered after minor
    surgery.
