History of Temples in India

• Temples in India differ in their construction
  with the region. The style, way of entrance, the
  arrangement of the main idol, color, and stones
  used, etc. differ from place to place in India.

• In South India, temples are built in Agama
  tradition. The main dwara, garbha gudi, and the
  prakaras follow the rules as per Agama Sastra.
  Even the number of prasadams and the dress that
  is worn by the main God in the temple are all
  guided as per this Shastra only. Temples of South
  India focus on gopurams, garbha gudi, and huge
  corridors filled with many pillars astonishingly
  adorned with hand paintings and sculptures.
• In North India, the temples are mostly white. One
  can reach inside the temple and touch the main
  idol too. They are less orthodox compared to
  South Indian ones. The style of the main idol in
  garbhagriha also varies in North India. The idols
  are mostly made of marble of white color. While
  in South India, most idols are made of stone that
  has preset conditions.
