The Pregnant Women's Guide to Dental Health
2
  • It is important to care for your teeth and gums
    before pregnancy and during pregnancy
  • During pregnancy hormonal changes can make your
gums more easily irritated and inflamed. If you
develop red, puffy or tender gums that bleed when
you brush, you may be experiencing an exaggerated
response to plaque that builds up on your teeth,
this is an indication that you need dental visit.

3
  • What are the Dental Problems during Pregnancy?
  • The Dental problems that pregnancy can trigger
    are as
  • Cavities- These are small and damaged surfaces on
teeth. They increase the risk of germs breeding
as a result of which the germs may travel down
through the digestive system while eating,
    affecting pregnancy and the fetus.
  • Loose teeth- Certain hormone released during
pregnancy or plaque may weaken the gums, making
    the tooth fragile and loose.
  • Gingivitis- It is a condition in which gums
become red and inflamed. Pregnancy can trigger
Gingivitis. In-fact, 60-75 of pregnant women
    suffer from this.

4
  • Periodontal Disease- Gingivitis if untreated may
cause serious periodontal problems. It may affect
your gums and bones that are attached to teeth.
This may seriously affect the orientation of your
teeth, so its better to seek medical
intervention. You can consult a dentist in Wakad
    to avoid any later complications.
  • Tooth corrosion- In pregnancy, it is common to
have nausea and vomiting known as morning
sickness. Vomiting exposes teeth to acidity.
Since teeth are made of calcium, exposure to
excess acidity leads to slow reaction causing
corrosion of teeth. patient can have sensitivity
    in the teeth

5
  • Preventative Tips
  • You can prevent oral health problems in pregnancy
by following very simple steps such as
  • Don't brush your teeth for at least 30 minutes
after vomiting or reflux. This will give the
enamel time to recover from the acid attack. Do
rinse your mouth with water after you vomit to
help wash the acid away, and smear some fluoride
toothpaste on your teeth to refresh your mouth
    and help strengthen enamel.
  • Brush and Floss- Make sure to brush with fluoride
toothpaste twice a day, as fluoride toothpaste
prevents cavities. Also, floss at least once a
    day.

6
  • Visit the dentist- Visit the dentist at least
    twice in your term.
  • Eat a diet rich with calcium, B12 and vitamin C
    to help keep gums healthy.
  • Eat healthy food and avoid consuming too much
sour and sweet food- Too much acidic or sweet
    food can trigger tooth problems.
