We have 12 to 13 different groups of medicines
for high blood sugar. The principle of the
medicinal treatment of diabetes is that we start
with one medication early during treatment of
diabetes. We keep adding medicines as needed to
control our blood sugar (along with diet
exercise)

Sugar. Decreased Insulin This happens when our
body cant make or use insulin like its supposed
to. Insulin is a substance that helps use the
sugar from the food you eat.

• Metformin
• Metformin is used with a proper diet and
  exercise program and possibly with
  other medications to control high blood sugar.

1. Metformin
It is used in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Controlling high blood sugar helps
prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems,
loss of limbs, and sexual function problems.
Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your
risk of a heart attack or stroke.

2. Pills/Medicines which help to insulin
(Sulfonylureas)
Glyburide, glipizide and glimepiride are examples
of some of the more commonly used sulfonylureas.
This group of medicines lowers your blood sugar
by stimulating beta cells to make more insulin.
The SFUs are generally taken once or twice daily.
For these medicines to work, your pancreas must
have beta cells that work.

3. Insulin releasing medicines (Non-
Sulfonylureas)
Glinides. Another type of insulin releasing
medicine (Secretatogues) are the Glinides
(repaglinide and nateglinide).
These medicines work the same way as SFUsthey
also stimulate the beta cells to make
more insulin.
