HAS ANALYTICS REALLY ALTERED NBA AND THE GAME?

Description:

Restructuring and transformation is what can be spotted everywhere today. We all are in a race of being not only better, but the best and this isn’t only about humans, it is about different markets, sectors, industries, competitors, and who not? Like said above, the sports industry also has intra-industry competitions and each sport, its association, and stakeholders want it to be the best. We have different governing bodies for different sports internationally. For Cricket, we have International Cricket Council (ICC), for Baseball it is International Baseball Federation (IBAF), for Basketball it is National Basketball Association (NBA), etc. If we start thinking of data analytics, then yes, it is there in the sports industry and it has started seeping deeply into all the sports gradually. Specifically talking of Basketball, there has been a whole new game introduced then the conventional one, after the analytics stepped into the shoes of Basketball. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

Restructuring and transformation is what can be
spotted everywhere today. We all are in a race of
being not only better, but the best and this
isnt only about humans, it is about different
markets, sectors, industries, competitors, and
who not? Like said above, the sports industry
also has intra-industry competitions and each
sport, its association, and stakeholders want it
to be the best. We have different governing
bodies for different sports internationally. For
Cricket, we have International Cricket Council
(ICC), for Baseball it is International Baseball
Federation (IBAF), for Basketball it is National
Basketball Association (NBA), etc. If we start
thinking of data analytics, then yes, it is there
in the sports industry and it has started seeping
deeply into all the sports gradually.
Specifically talking of Basketball, there has
been a whole new game introduced then the
conventional one, after the analytics stepped
into the shoes of Basketball.
3
Conventionally, the NBA data merely included the
assists made and points scored, but detail
collection was difficult, unlike now. Today, all
the basketball teams have data analysts in the
team to work along with the team coaches and
identify the talents and weaknesses of the
players. The game of basketball is one that
cannot be easily analyzed because there are
continuous player movements. To simplify that,
all the basketball courts are now equipped with
video systems that are able to track each
movement happening during the matches. After
analyzing those video clips carefully, the
coaches can study in detail the leg movements,
some specific habits and activities of players
individually and then with the help of data
analysts, decide on the strategies to be
formulated.
4
After the advent and introduction of analytics in
the NBA, it has become simpler to work upon the
playing condition of the NBA players. With the
artificial intelligence and machine learning
models, it is easy to determine which player
needs to rest for the next matches so that the
performance is not affected. Despite the fans not
liking this pattern, yet it is important to let
their favorite players rest because if they
wont, then they may suffer an injury which will
further affect their performance for a longer
duration. The fans are upset that they are
getting so expensive tickets to see their
favorite players play live in the court, and then
they are not there because they are asked to take
an off and rest. Yet, even the best NBA teams
give their success credit to data analytics. The
NBA basketball data is suggestive of the fact
that the players themselves use sleep monitors
and tech-wearable, which help them in tracking
down their level of fatigue, stress, and anxiety.
This way the players themselves try to avoid
being injured. One of the biggest additions by
analytics to the NBA is the rise in the number of
three-point shots. If we have a look at the NBA
data, an average team scores only 18.4
three-point shots per game.
5
This is for a course of 5 years, from 2012 to
2017. This led to the encouragement of the NBA
players who were the best at giving
three-pointers, so that these shots happen as
much as possible in order to encourage winning.
NBA analytics is also at ease in identifying
which player is great at defense and which is
not. Analytics though would have the desired
effect only when the data is just as trustworthy.
For the NBA data for your business needs, you
should look after the data provider for your
business that is reliable in terms of data,
efficient and effective in data delivery.
