1
An Overview of the Three Doshas
  • (TriDosha)

2
In Vedic knowledge, Tri is translated as three,
and dosha is translated as a fault. The exact
meaning of the term TriDosha or three Dosha means
the three elements fault that lies inside a
human. The three Doshas are considered
replaceable elements that must be replaced with a
new element over time, but if this does not
happen and one Dosha accumulates inside a person,
it starts to rot and this element is known as
Dosha.  .
3
  • You may know that whenever something accumulates
in our bodies, it creates a lot of disturbance
for blood circulation, muscle movements, and
    neurological links. This disturbance impacts
humans both mentally and physically.  Below are
the details about each of the Dosha

Vata Dosha - air, and space element
  • Vata Dosha is known as the element of air, and
space. It has five different subtypes. Prana,
Udana, Vyana, Samana, and Apana. This is
responsible for human movements, nerve activity,
    and excretion.

6
  • The properties of this Dosha are light, dry,
    cold, rough, and subtle.
  • This controls the activity in our brain to make
    it function normally.
  • It helps the body produce and understand
    different sounds.
  • All the human senses work through the Vata Dosha.

7
Pitta Dosha - the fire element
  • The Pitta Dosha is also known as the fire
element. It has five subtypes or conditions,
namely Pachaka, Ranjaka, Bhrajaka, Sadhaka, and
Alochaka. The basic composition of the Pitta
    Dosha involves fire and water.

8
  • It has the properties of both fire and water, it
is sharp, hot, light, moist, shining, and
    intense.
  • This is related to the human metabolism and
    digestion system in our bodies.
  • It creates heat inside the body and generates
    vision through light.
  • It is also responsible for the hunger, and thirst
    that a human feels.
  • The Pitta Dosha is also related to intelligence,
    courage, and taste.

9
Kapha Dosha - water, and earth element
  • Kapha Dosha is the element of water and earth.
This also has five subtypes or conditional
    elements, namely Kledaka, Bodhaka, Avalambaka,
Shleshaka, and Tarpaka. This is Dosha is
responsible for the human body structure, fluids
    inside the human body.

10
  • The Kapha Dosha has the properties of water and
earth, which are Oily, Cold, Heavy, Slow, Slimy,
    Sticky, and Stable.
  • As this Dosha is related to bodily structure, it
helps the joints and protects them from
    degeneration.
  • It also extends its strength towards the muscle
tissue that helps maintain the body structure.
  • It is the healer inside our bodies, so if
something inside a human body is broken, it works
    to repair, and regenerate it.
  • It also impacts the mental ability and
intellectual properties of the human body.

Understanding the Three Doshas
  • These three Doshas are three different elements
in nature. All other elements are formed from
these three basic elements. That is why
understanding, and knowing these is important for
anyone who wants to become a yoga teacher. This
opens up a vast amount of knowledge about these
Doshas, and once a teacher knows about them,
he/she can better utilize them and can also
prevent the accumulation of any of these.
