Whale shark adventure is one of the most exciting
activities for many divers in La Paz. Do you want
to know some interesting facts about the gentle
giant-whale shark in La Paz?
The Largest Fish on the Planet
The whale shark is the largest fish living on
planet Earth. These specimens weigh around 34
tons and 20 meters long. Whale sharks are
commonly seen when they are between 3 and 12
meters, which is quite impressive. You will love
to see the whale sharks moving slowly and gently.
These giant creatures are harmless to humans. The
whale sharks feed on plankton, microscopic
animals, and algae.
The Whale Sharks Have Teeth
Do you know the gentle giant- whale sharks have
teeth? Are you scared? Do not worry! There is
nothing to feel afraid of from the whale
sharks. The whale sharks look toothless but have
a large number of tiny bristle-like teeth that
are spread over 300 rows per jaw.
3
The Whale Sharks could Live Long
The average lifespan of whale sharks is estimated
between 100 to 150 years. The oldest whale shark
specimen recorded was about 70 years old.
The Whale Sharks are Endangered Species
In 2002, CITES classified whale sharks as
vulnerable species. Apart from some natural
predators, like Orca and some opportunistic
sharks, the greatest threat of the whale shark
species is humans. The whale shark fins are
considered a prized catch for humans.
The Whale Shark Reproduction
There are three different modes of reproduction
among sharks and fishes.
Oviparous species lay eggs.
Viviparous species give birth to live young. This
form of reproduction is similar to mammals. There
is a placental link between the mother and the
developing embryo through which it gets the
nutrients.
4
Ovoviviparous species give birth to live young
but have a different method of internal
nourishment. In this type of reproduction, the
initial development of the embryo occurs within
an egg, where it gains nutrients from the yolk.
The embryo emerges from the egg but still stays
inside the mother till the birth
La Paz is the Best Place to see the Whale Sharks
The gentle giant- whale sharks are found in the
warm tropical and temperate waters of La Paz,
located on the Baja California peninsula. There
is no way you will miss the whale shark adventure
in La Paz experience. The biodiversity of La Paz
attracts a high number of whale sharks. La Paz
water body is home to one of the large
concentrations of whale sharks in the world. It
proves to be the best destination for scuba
