What Does Olympics Historical Data Reveal?

Description:

Olympics are a part of our rich historic culture, the roots of which could be traced back to the Greek Empire 3000 years ago. It is the living embodiment of how far the world has come and it still continues to grow. The Games really took off some 1500 years later and the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin birthed the idea of the modern Olympics. Here is when the Olympics became the international athletic competition where athletes competed to showcase their skills and bring glory to their country. We can then trace the first modern Olympics to Athens, Greece in celebration of the Games history where 13 nations participated with 280 athletes in 43 events. Comparing that to the 2004 Summer Olympics which took place in Athens as well and involved 11,000 athletes from 201 countries. Currently, Olympics are held every two years in different locations around the world and are divided into Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

Olympics are a part of our rich historic culture,
the roots of which could be traced back to the
Greek Empire 3000 years ago. It is the living
embodiment of how far the world has come and it
still continues to grow. The Games really took
off some 1500 years later and the efforts of
Baron Pierre de Coubertin birthed the idea of the
modern Olympics. Here is when the Olympics became
the international athletic competition where
athletes competed to showcase their skills and
bring glory to their country. We can then trace
the first modern Olympics to Athens, Greece in
celebration of the Games history where 13 nations
participated with 280 athletes in 43 events.
Comparing that to the 2004 Summer Olympics which
took place in Athens as well and involved 11,000
athletes from 201 countries. Currently, Olympics
are held every two years in different locations
around the world and are divided into Summer
Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games.

With such a rich history, spanning from 1896 to
2018 we also have a lot of historical Olympic
data that could be used to draw insights about
the games. When it comes to Olympic games do host
countries really enjoy an undue advantage? Would
countries' economic factors have a role to play
in how many medals they win? Also, does age
affect how many medals players win? All these
questions have long since plagued the mind and
research suggests that all these questions can be
put to rest by combining the power of big data
and the Olympics. The Home Field Advantage
4
Olympic analysts suggest that being a host
country would mean they bring home 3 times more
medals than as an away team. The USA has hosted
Olympic games 8 times so far which is the highest
number by any country and is followed by France,
they have hosted the games five times. While if
we compare that with the number of medals won,
the USA tops that list as well with the most
medals and is then followed by Germany and France
is third on that list. Hence proving the point
that host countries do have an undue advantage.
Some countries like Spain performed the year
after they hosted the games. A Similar trend was
noticed with Japan, South Korea, Mexico and
Norway who took more medals home after hosting
the games. Whereas following the footpath of the
USA, Canada, Russia won more when they were
hosting the event. The Economic Climate and its
Effect Coming on to how a countrys
socio-economic variables affect its performance
in the Olympic games.
5
Some researchers used GDP as the representative
of the economic performance of the country and
upon analysis found that GDP and no. of medals
won enjoy a direct relationship as better
economic conditions would mean the contestant
would be better prepared, as well as a large
population pool, would provide better selection
criteria. Comparing the top GDP countries have
all won more than 50 medals and the USA recorded
the highest number of all with 264 medals while
countries with low GDP had almost zero medals.
6
Is there a thing called Age Factor in
Olympics? While age is an important factor in all
sports and hence it is relevant to the Olympics
as well. The concept is one needs to be in a
relative age group to be more impactful in the
different categories of sports. While over the
years the average age of players has undergone a
shift in Olympics, the range of players winning
medals have an average age lesser than what was
years ago and for every sport, the optimum age
would defer.
7
While history has had an impact on sports but
Olympics is also used as a platform to make a
social and political impact as well. The Games
have served as a unifier and have taken a stand
on important matters like the inclusion of women
in sports, racial justice, civil rights, and it
has learned and evolved with time. Such insights
as above could only be made possible with a
thorough understanding of the historical data of
the sport. First and foremost, though the access
to the right quality of data also comes in. For
that purpose, depending on none other than Data
Sports Group would be a wise choice who give
access to such historical data as well as live
data of 39 individual sports events, with an
added choice to choose a specific country pack
that would make integration and understanding
easier. Their Olympic API content solution is
