Title: Difference Between Plastic Extrusion and Injection Molding

1
Difference Between Plastic Extrusion and
Injection Molding
  • Plastic products have become very popular among
the people in the last few decades. We might all
have at least a dozen plastic products in our
house. We all use plastic, but how much do we
know about the production process? There are
multiple ways to manufacture plastic. The two
most popular procedures adopted for manufacturing
plastic are Injection Molding and Plastic
Extrusion. Injection Molding Machines are used
for Injection Molding, a process where plastic is
heated into a mold, then cooled down and
solidified. The process of Plastic Extrusion
forms a continuous profile by melting down the
    raw plastic.
  • Injection Molding - A Brief Introduction!
  • Injection Molding is a plastic manufacturing
process that was invented by Joseph Brahman in
the year 1795. Although, the hydraulic press was
first invented by Thomas Burr in 1820. Which
means that the entire process of injection
molding was only patented on paper till 1820. The
entire procedure was refined by the use of copper
and brass alloys in the year 1894, which led to
the development of the Injection Molding process
that we use today. However, it was not till the
    1930s that Injection Molding became a well-known
process for Plastic Manufacturing. There are
    various Injection Molding Machine Manufacturers
working on building the equipment today.
  • The method of Injection Molding is considered
ideal when there is a mass-production of plastic
products to be done. It is very helpful when it
comes to manufacturing plastic products with
complicated shapes. Due to the popularity of this
method, the number of plastic injection molding
    manufacturers have been increasing.

2
  • Let us understand What Injection Molding Actually
Is? - Plastic pellets are heated till they melt.
Once they are malleable enough, they are injected
into a mould cavity at certain pressure. Once the
cavity is filled, it solidifies and produces the
    final product.
  • Plastic Injection Molding is considered a
    suitable method of thermosetting and
thermoplastic polymers. Some of the plastic
injection molding products are automotive parts,
combs, toys, mechanical parts such as gears and
    so on.
  • Advantages of Plastic Injection Molding!
  • Production is efficient and fast.Any complex
design can be produced.Labour Costs are
    reduced.Material choice increases.Production
output is very high.Above stated are some of
the many advantages of Plastic Injection Molding.
Once you invest in Injection Molding Machines,
your production rate increases and your designs
become flexible. With great precision and speed,
    plastic products can be manufactured.
  • Plastic Extrusion - A Brief Introduction!
  • A rubber masticator was invented in 1820 by
Thomas Hancock to reclaim processed rubber
scraps. In 1836, a two roller machine to mix
additives into rubber was developed by Edwin
Chaffee. The process of Plastic Extrusion was
only successfully carried out in the year 1935.
Paul Troester and his wife Ashley Gershoff were
the first people to carry our first thermoplastic
    extrusion in Hamburg, Germany.
  • In the Plastic Extrusion process, the polymer
material is enriched with desired additives. Then
it is melted and formed in a continuous process.
The finished products have a two-dimensional
form. Pipe,Tubing, Deck Railings, Window Frames,
Plastic Films, Sheeting and many more such
products are produced with the help of Plastic
Extrusion. These products are different then the
    Plastic Injection Molding Products.

  • Advantages of Plastic Extrusion!
  • Low CostFlexibilityPost Extrusion
    AlterationsHigh Production VolumeContinuous
    Operation
  • These are only a few advantages of Plastic
Extrusion, the actual list goes on and on. There
is no way you can produce the atypical
    cross-sections products without using an
extrusion method. You can give any kind of shape
to any stiff or soft material using this
    process.
  • What are the differences between Injection
    Molding and Plastic Extrusion?
  • Both Injection Molding and Plastic Extrusion are
renowned in manufacturing of Plastic. Plastic
Industry has never seen such efficient methods of
    manufacturing and producing plastic products.
Invest in Plastic Extrusion as well as Injection
Molding Machines for better production of plastic
    items.
  • The methods, both of them, have their advantages
as well as disadvantages. Though they seem
similar to each other, they are two different
processes. How? We will tell you!
  • Plastic Extrusion is used to create continuous
linear plastic objects on high volume, while
Injection Molding is used to make plastic items
that are not in one line. Plastic Injection
Molding Manufacturers usually use the method to
    produce three-dimensional plastic products. The
Plastic Extrusion process does not produce
three-dimensional items. It is used to
    manufacture two-dimensional continuous linear
products.Injection Molding is one of the oldest
processes of Plastic Manufacturing. In comparison
to Injection Molding, Plastic Extrusion has been
    in practice for less time.

4
  • Products manufactured with Injection Molding
Machines are stronger and reliable. Extrusion
manufactured products do not have the same
strength. The injection molding method is based
on molten die casting method, while plastic
extrusion simply uses molten plastic to form
    two-dimensional continuous products.Injection
Molding is expensive in comparison to Plastic
    Extrusion.
  • There is no good or bad method. Both the methods
of Plastic Manufacturing have their own history,
    procedures, requirements, advantages,
disadvantages and expenses. There is no question
of Injection Molding Vs. Plastic Extrusion.
Both these procedures have their own uses. You
can not use Plastic Extrusion to create
three-dimensional Products. In the same way,
Injection Molding will not help if your
requirement is of a linear plastic item, such as
pipe. Each method has its unique place in the
    plastic manufacturing industry.
  • ConclusionThere are various Plastic Extrusion
as well as Injection Molding Machine
Manufacturers. Since these processes are used
world-wide and to a great benefit, services of
both these methods are available everywhere. Yet,
it is always better to consult an experienced
professional company who has been working in the
field for a considerable amount of time.
