4High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when
your blood pressure increases to unhealthy
levels. Hypertension is defined as a systolic
blood pressure (SBP) of 140 mm Hg or more, or a
diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 90 mm Hg or
more, or taking antihypertensive medication.
5Five categories define blood pressure readings
healthy A healthy blood pressure reading is
less than 120/80 millimeters of mercury (mm
Hg).Elevated The systolic number is between
120 and 129 mm Hg, and the diastolic number is
less than 80 mm Hg. Stage 1 hypertension The
systolic number is between 130 and 139 mm Hg, or
the diastolic number is between 80 and 89 mm Hg.
6Stage 2 hypertension The systolic number is 140
mm Hg or higher, or the diastolic number is 90 mm
Hg or higher.Hypertensive crisis The systolic
number is over 180 mm Hg, or the diastolic number
is over 120 mm Hg.

etiologies, including renal, vascular, and
endocrine causes. Primary or essential
hypertension accounts for 90-95 of adult cases,
and secondary hypertension accounts for 2-10 of
cases.

include headachesshortness of

11Effective management and treatment of
hypertension requires clinicians and patients to
work together to balance pharmacologic and
nonpharmacological interventions and prevent
target organ damageIf lifestyle modifications
are insufficient to achieve the goal blood
pressure (BP), there are several drug options for
the treatment and management of hypertension.
