HOW TO MINIMIZE HURRICANE DAMAGE TO YOUR ROOF

  • Beginning in June and lasting right through the
end of November is hurricane season in Florida.
However, the season peaks in August and early
October, due to high surface temperatures in the
Atlantic. If youre a homeowner in South Florida,
youll know just how important it is to try and
minimize damage to your home during hurricane
season, and the roof is often the most
    vulnerable.
  • Whats the most common damage during a hurricane?
  • Water leaks are commonly experienced by
homeowners after a hurricane, and these are
typically caused by broken tiles, shingles or any
other part of the roof. A leak is always a risk
to your entire home and should be fixed as soon
as possible to prevent any further damage to
    property, or even life.

  • Hail, ice, wind, snow, tree roots and tree limbs,
and flying debris can also cause serious damage
to a roof during a big storm or hurricane.
  • What can you do to protect your roof and minimize
    damage?
  • While there are a couple of simple DIY methods of
protecting your roof before a hurricane or storm
hits, others will require expert intervention
  • Hurricane shutters and storm doors
  • Having these installed is essential if you live
in a part of the country or region that
experiences frequent storms and where the risk of
    hurricanes is imminent.

4
  • Gutter guards and a good roof sealant
  • These are a fantastic investment if you
frequently experience high levels of rainfall,
and the latter can prevent the water from seeping
(or gushing!) into your home by creating an
    airtight barrier.
  • Protective plywood or other material
  • If you have an asphalt shingle roof, you can use
plywood as a protective sheet over your roof to
help protect the shingles from cracking and
splitting in a storm. While this method is often
effective, plywood can be costly and it must be
completely waterproof. You could also use a roof
sheet to cover your shingles or tiles, but they
should always be installed by a professional to
    ensure theyre properly sealed.

5
  • Cut down trees
  • Trees and/or branches that are close to your home
could present a significant threat in the event
of a big storm or hurricane cutting them down or
trimming them can minimize the risk of damage to
    your home.
  • Removing debris and large items
  • Anything outside your home that isnt nailed
down, is going to be a potential risk during high
winds, and should be removed for your safety, and
    your propertys.

6
  • Get your roof inspected and repaired
  • When a big storm or hurricane is forecast, it
really does pay to have your roof inspected to
make sure it can hold up to high winds and heavy
rains. By doing so, you can save you a lot of
money in repairs after the event.
  • Hurricanes are terrifying events that can cost
Florida residents much more than their homes, and
their seriousness should never be underestimated.
Do everything you can to secure your home during
hurricane season, by getting your roof regularly
inspected and repaired to minimize damage and
potential loss to property and lives.
