5HISTORY
The location of IKSV as a university has immense
historical significance. As a matter of fact, the
University is situated in the ancient district of
Rajnandgaon. During Ashokas reign, the region
was the part of Mauryan Empire. However, the
kings of ancient India were patrons of art,
music, and dance. So, Maharaja Birendra Bahadur
Singh and maharani Padmavati Devi donated this
piece of land to the King of Khairagarh. As a
result, the palace turned into a music
university. Hence, its name was the University of
Music Fine Arts. As far as the name is
concerned, two theories are surrounding it.
Moreover, the first theory states that Indira was
the daughter of the King and she was fond of
music. But, death hit her soon. So, in her
remembrance, the University got the name Indira
Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyala. Yet, another theory
suggests that the state kept the name on the
ex-Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. In fact, she
inaugurated IKSV on 14th October 1956. As of now,
it is unclear that which theory holds more
significance.
