GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS (GDM) EXERCISE
GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS(GDM) is defined as
"carbohydrate intolerance with the first
recognition or onset during pregnancy" GDM is
diabetes diagnosis for the first time during
pregnancy. Gestational diabetes effects how the
cells use sugar (glucose). Gestational diabetes
causes high blood sugar due to which both women
and child gets affected. Women with gestational
diabetes are at subsequent risk of getting type 2
diabetes. 
In women with gestational diabetes blood sugar
usually returns normal soon after delivery.
Women's with GDM needs to be tested for changes
in blood sugar more often.
Causes of GDM
Normally various hormones work to keep sugar
levels in check. GDM is caused by insulin
insensitivity or due to hormonal secretions like
leptin, cortisol, estrogen during pregnancy.

Overweight or Obesity Lack of physical
exercises Pre-diabetes Polycystic ovary
syndrome Previous case of diabetes in family Age
more than 30 -
Symptoms of GDM
If a women is diagnosed with GDM she will
experience various kinds of symptoms during their
pregnancy or gestation period the most common
symptoms of GDM are
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Excessive urination
  • Thirsty increase 
  • Increased appetite
  • High blood pressure

Complications
The complications in GDM differentiate in mother
and even in child , the child and the mother may
experience some of the common complications like
  • Premature birth
  • Excessive birth weight
  • Low blood sugar(hypoglycemia)
  • Stillbirth
  • Breathing problems -

Prevention of GDM
  • Change in lifestyle - change in lifestyle lead to
    controlled sugar levels which helps in prevention
    of any kind of pathological problem.
  • Eat healthy food - Try to consume good amount of
    high nutritious food, keep a check on calories
    intake. Consume more fibrous food.
  • Try to expect child at a healthy age to avoid
    such kind of problems.
  • Have regular check on body weight, height,
    calories, micronutrients.
  • Exercises

Exercising or being physically active play most
important role in preventing GDM. exercises help
to improve cardiovascular health, decrease risk
of breathing problems, control blood pressure.
Exercise help to reduce vast effects of
hypoglycemia in women and foetus.
Exercise prescription  for GDM
In GDM there is the main role of exercise which
may vary from individual, the physiotherapist
prescribe different type of exercises to the
patients and the most important is FITT
(frequency, intensity, time/duration and type) 
  • Slow and controlled impact aerobics (large muscle
    activities in a rhythmic manner) e.g., walking,
    swimming ,dancing 4-5 Days per week ,30 -40
    minutes.
  • Resistance (multi joint exercises, large muscle
    groups) e.g., light weight dumbbells, resistance
    band ,pregnancy Pilates, body weight
    exercises.2-3 Days per week 20 -30 minutes.

  • Stretching exercises for Flexibility and
    Relaxation.5 Days per week 15 to 30 minutes or
    added during static postures at workplace or
    home.

Things to remember while exercising
  • Always maintain a proper schedule for exercise
    and discuss your exercise with physiotherapist.
  • Maintain  good posture
  • Use light weights and keep the number of
    repetition 8 -15 counts, progress from less
    counts to achieve higher counts
  • Watch your blood sugar level. Maintain proper
    schedule for exercises and the meal  consumption
    always try to exercise 2 to 3 hours after any
    meal.
  • Avoid Jumping, bouncing ,end range stretches
    ,lifting heavy weights and  jerky motions
  • Rehydrate frequently
  • Take Rest breaks, when required.
