HOW TECHNOLOGY CAN PROMOTE POSITIVE CHANGES IN
SAFETY CULTURE
  • In addition to the direct benefits, technology
enhancements in health, Safety, environmental and
employee wellbeing applications has had major
effects on overall safety cultures within
    organisations.
  • Such benefits are often unseen, however can have
a significant positive effect in the long term by
looking at areas such as data capture, hazard
    analysis and better employee accountability
  • This has led to a more holistic view of HSE
issues at work sites where a general focus on
quality is now becoming part of a health and
    safety practitioners collective responsibility.

6
AREAS OF INDIRECT SAFETY CULTURE IMPROVEMENTS
The indirect areas in which health and safety
innovations have resulted in overall safety
culture improvements

TECHNOLOGY IN HSE TRAINING AND INFORMATION
RETENTION
  • Training trends are moving away from the
traditional classroom and instructor base type of
    practices.
  • Much of the recent changes in trends have
involved awareness and knowledge type training
where a number of the following practices are now
    being used
  • Computer based and e-learning type training
    (Includes learning through mobile applications)
  • Simulator type learning
  • Virtual Reality type training

TECHNOLOGY IN WORKER WELFARE ASSESSMENTS
  • While it is not always possible to spot the early
signs of various health conditions, technologies
exist that can provide an indication of this by
monitoring the various vital signs associated
with the condition. Symptoms such as high blood
pressure, blood cholesterol, BMI, heart rate,
    body composition etc.
  • Unmanned health stations can be utilised to
measure a number of these vitals within a very
short period of time. This provides the basic
awareness to all employees on what they need to
be mindful of with regards to their current
health or the need for an immediate doctor visit.

Such stations have proved marginally successful
in predicting early signs of cancer, provide
indication of hypertension and generally
encourage employees to get involved with
different occupational health campaigns within an
organisation.

WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY AND EMPLOYEE WELLNESS
  • Popular within the fitness industry as of late,
wearable technologies have made a steady shift to
the health and safety industry, with their
    application demonstrating some positive trends
when it comes to employee welfare and overall
    health and safety performance.
  • Already utilised in numerous multinational
    organizations worldwide, wearable technology can
allow for monitoring vital signs of the employees
during their time at work. Identifying likely
times of fatigue, hours worked, time spent in
high risks locations and many more.

10
WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY AND EMPLOYEE WELLNESS
  • The use of various types of health and safety
software has become more commonplace over the
last few years, to an extent that many companies
utilising quality, health, safety, security and
environmental software have begun enhancing the
capabilities of their programs by developing the
mobile application side of these programs.
  • Previously document-heavy type of health and
    safety methods involving accident investigation
and root cause analysis, behavioural based safety
    observations, near miss reporting and
non-conformance reporting, can now be done at a
much faster pace, allowing for better overall
data capture and better future analysis.

11
DRIVER SAFETY AND JOURNEY MANAGEMENT
  • Fully automated vehicles will become a reality in
the near future, Until then, safety behind the
wheel still rests with the vehicle operator.
Todays driver assistance technologies can give a
safe driver an extra edge out on the road.
  • Organisations with large fleets of vehicles have
gone one step further by utilising Journey
Management Plan applications and software to
firstly, allow drivers to assess the risk of
their upcoming journey, provide the driver with
the required guidance, monitor working hours and
remind them of their break periods and lastly,
allow the company headquarters to monitor the
vehicles for location and compliance with speed
    limits.

12
DRONE TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTH AND SAFETY
Using drones in the workplace has allowed
businesses to access dangerous areas within their
facilitates, such as those that are too hot, cold
or small for worker access. Reducing the risk to
employees, the drones can collect the required
data and deliver it to the appropriate person.
13
ASSESSING SAFETY TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS
  • When assessing the need for any new safety
technology, the necessary research and time needs
to go into exploring the suitability of such
    technology within the business.
  • Businesses should be clear on the following areas
    when assessing such needs
  • Direct Benefits Can be measured in financial
terms (eg. Direct reduction in accidents, time
    saving, significant administrative cost
    reductions)
  • Indirect Benefits Normally difficult to measure
in financial terms (Long term positive change in
safety culture through better reporting, better
    employee participation in safety activities)
  • Training requirements
  • Employee buy-in and participation
  • Is it a tool or a toy?
  • A simple question that often needs to be asked
when assessing the need for introducing
technological enhancements when it comes to the
    safety of operations.
