We get asked a lot when is the best time to ski
in Japan and it really depends on what you are
looking for. Whether youre looking for waist
deep powder or prefer to ski on those epic
bluebird days and lap the park will depend on
what time of year you visit.We have put together
a guide below to help you decide which is the
right time for you to plan and book your winter
trip to Japan.

Kick off December

• You can ski in Japan around mid-December that is
  when most resorts are kicking off. The snow can
  be amazing but can be hit and miss. This is when
  the resorts are getting a good base but you might
  find your self skiing through bamboo shoots so
  keep your wits about you if you are venturing
  off-piste early season.
• If you hit it right and there are some big early
  storms rolling through the resorts are
  not-crowded and lift lines are non-existent.

Neck deep January

• January is the coldest month to ski in Japan but
  it really turns it on. This is the most reliable
  time to go skiing and snowboarding. You can
  generally expect a ton of that famous Japanese
  Powder snow. With the consistent storms rolling
  through, this is the best time to go for full
  face shots and epic tree skiing.
• Accommodation is at a premium over this time and
  will book out earlier than other periods. To
  avoid disappointment, book early. This time of
  year the resorts are buzzing and if you can time
  your holiday, before Chinese New Year,(between 21
  January and 20 February)  youll be winning.

Waist deep February

• February still delivers decent snowfalls with
  continued cold temperatures. Although the storms
  are not as consistent compared to January the
  snow still comes in hard. After the Chinese New
  Year ends around late Feb the crowds disperse and
  it is still a great time to ski and board. The
  resorts can still be busy epically if you are
  visiting Niseko and Hakuba due to the quality of
  the snow this time of year.
• By the end of the month, bluebird days begin to
  come through revealing the epic views you have
  been dying to see all winter. We hold our annual
  park comp Yama Jam at the Hut in late Feb so best
  to book well in advance if you are planning to be
  around for that.

Sunny park laps March

• Who doesnt love a spring ski in Japan? Days are
  warmer, sunnier and longer. And due to such a
  high snowfall over Jan and Feb, there is a great
  base to work with and enough snowfall for fresh
  tracks. By now, the storms have backed off so
  there is time to enjoy those bluebird days.
  Saying that though, it is not uncommon for big
  storms to roll through with some amazing
  unexpected dumps.

Shes all wrapped up April

• It is all coming to a close by this stage, with
  the warmer days and nights staying above 0. The
  snow begins to melt away. The Sakura Cheery
  blossoms begin to bloom and the days are longer.
  You are not going to see big dumps as in the
  previous months and most resorts, restaurants and
  shops will all be closing at this point.
• The above is true except for Gassan. A small ski
  hill located on the southern slopes of Mt
  Ubagatake in the Yamagata Prefecture. Due to
  large amounts of snowfall this mountain gets over
  the season this resort actually opens for the
  late spring season usually from April until
  late July.
