Tips For Securing Your Home as A Renter
2
  • While renting a home has many advantages,
security isnt always at the top of that list,
and many rented homes are inadequately secure.
For homeowners, its easy to install a variety a
security measures to protect themselves and their
property, but its not always as straightforward
for anyone renting. For starters, a tenant may
not be able to afford to upgrade the security at
their rented home, and they may also come up
against opposition from the property owner.
  • If you live in a rented home and are worried that
it may not be as secure as it could be, here are
a few tips and factors to consider

3
  • Be clear on your rights
  • Always check with your landlord/lady before
drilling holes to add security systems, and if
theyre not sure what is and isnt permitted by
law in your particular jurisdiction or housing
association, ask them to find out at the
    earliest.
  • Make securing doors and windows a priority
  • These are the most common entry points for
intruders and thieves, and as such, they should
be as well protected as they can possibly be.
Check the locks on every door and window to make
sure they function and are not in need of repair
or replacement if youre unsure, ask your
local, residential locksmith to come and inspect
    them for you.

4
  • Front door security
  • If your front door doesnt have a deadbolt in
place, this should be addressed asap, either by
you as the renter, the landlord/lady or property
    manager.
  • Are the strike plates screwed into the door jamb
in good condition? If not (maybe theyre loose,
misaligned or poorly installed) they can be a
weak point in your homes security, and again, a
local, licensed locksmith can help assess them
    for you.
  • Check whether your landlord/lady had the locks
rekeyed between tenants, and if not, whether they
would consider having them rekeyed for your
    protection.

5
  • Outside door hinges are much easier for someone
with criminal intentions to disassemble, and if
your door hinges are on the outside, not the
inside of your door, youll need to have them
reinstalled or replaced as soon as possible.
  • Window security
  • Check whether every window actually locks
correctly, and if you have any sliding doors or
windows, youll likely need to reinforce their
security with a strong rod or similar system. If
youre unsure as to how you can improve the
security on sliding doors, its best to have a
    locksmith advise you.

6
  • One other simple way to make sure your windows
arent tempting for burglars and intruders to
break their way into, hang drapes or blinds and
close them when youre not at home, and when you
    go to bed at night.
  • Consider investing in a smart device
  • Smart home devices no longer mean that a
permanent equipment installation is needed (a
problem for many renters), and if youre tech
savvy, you can take advantage of the many smart
monitoring systems available on the market today.

7
  • Your local, residential locksmith can provide you
    with up-to-the-minute security advice and
guidance, and as a renter, it can make sense to
seek their help if youre at all unsure as to how
well protected you and your rented home actually
    are.
