"Takht" or "Takhata" literally means "throne" or
"seat of authority." It is a direct result of the
great historical growth of Sikhism, the main
religion in the northern regions of India. But
the Sikhs have made an impact not only in India
but also throughout the world.
Guru Hargobind established the first and most
important one in the year 1609. It is called
'Akal Takht' (the Throne of the Timeless God) and
is found across the entryway of Harmandir Sahib -
the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
