2SHOULDER INJURIES IN SPORTS
The shoulder joint provides wide varieties of
movements, shoulder is ball and socket type of
joint which is more likely to prone to injuries.
While playing Sports there are several conditions
that might hurt the shoulder and cause different
type of shoulder injuries. The most common
injuries that occurs while playing sports include
dislocations, acromioclavicular joint injuries,
rotator cuff injuries, labral tear, biceps
injuries, bursitis, tendonitis and fractures.
The dislocation and ACJ injuries are the most
common injuries in sports contact sports. While
the rotator cuff tears and bicep injuries are
common in sports that involve heavy weight
lifting and Throwing activities. Many of the
sports that contains fall or crashes situations
main lead to the fracture of shoulder joint. It
might be quite difficult to to assess the
severity of shoulder injuries that occur while

3Most common shoulder injuries while sports-
1) Rotator cuff tear - Rotator cuff tear is the
most common shoulder injury which results from
sports and workouts. The rotator cuff consists of
four muscle tendons which helps in lifting and
rotation of the shoulder. The injury begins with
the thickening or damage to the tendon.
4- Pain at rest, and during sleep on the injured
shoulder. - Pain while lifting the arm overhead.
- Pain while reaching far objects.
- Weakness in lifting and rotating the arm.

- 2) Acromioclavicular joint injuries- The
acromioclavicular ligament is responsible for the
strength off the shoulder which provides
stability to the shoulder. AC injuries are often
caused by sudden blow to the shoulder while the
arm is in lower position. - Symptoms of acromioclavicular injuries-
- Any deformity over the joint.
- Swelling over the joint
- Pain in shoulder while breathing, coughing or
sneezing. - 3) Shoulder Tendonitis- The rotator cuff
tendonitis is a condition that affects the
tendons and muscles that help the shoulder joint
in movement, if there is tendonitis that directly
means that the tendons are either irritated or
inflamated due to certain reasons.
5Symptoms of shoulder Tendonitis -
- Pain and swelling in the shoulder
- Stiffness
- Excessive fatigue while raising the arm overhead
- Sudden clicking sound while raising the arm
- Lack of strength and loss of mobility
4) Shoulder labral tear- The labrum is a soft
cartilage that is present around the socket of
the shoulder joint, it helps the ball of the
shoulder to stay at the desired position. A SLAP
tear can be caused by traumatic accident or due
to any fall, overstretching of the arm or
catching any heavy object, this condition is
generally seen in sports like volleyball,
baseball, basketball.
- Symptoms of SLAP injuries-
- Popping sensation while movement.
- Pain in movement, specially in overhead
movements. - Major decrease in shoulder strength.
- Decreased range of motion.
