2It has been said that the metaverse, which is a
digital replica of planet Earth where users can
interact with one another in real-time and share
information, will be the next big thing in
technology. You might be wondering what this
means? Where did the term metaverse come from?
Why is it important? Then what do we mean when
we say that its the next big thing in
technology? The concept of the m etaverse is
nothing new. Many science fiction books have
already described a digital replica of planet
Earth in which people can interact with one
another and the planet itself in real-time
through the use of virtual reality glasses and
headsets. However, with the invention of
augmented reality in 2010, which was followed by
advances in 3-D mapping, motion capture cameras,
artificial intelligence routines, and voice
recognition software, the idea of a completely
virtual world available to daily users for work
or leisure purposes did not seem as far
fetched. The metaverse is a digital replica of
planet Earth where people are able to interact in
real-time. This virtual space is accessible via
the use of an avatar and navigated using natural
language commands. Just like in the real world,
users will be able to interact with one another
and share information. The term metaverse was
first coined by Neal Stephenson, Bruce Sterling,
and others back in 1992 during the writing of
Snow Crash which was published in 2003. At
present the metaverse has not yet been fully
realized, however, there are already real-life
examples of it in existence, albeit on a small
scale. Were talking about online forums (such as
Reddit), chat rooms, and virtual worlds such as
Second Life or World of Warcraft, to name a
few. Indias first Metaverse is the online
universe created by NextMeet. It falls under a
broader category called Metaverses, which are
essentially a type of artificial world that
exists only in cyberspace. Users of NextMeet will
be able to visit multiple virtual worlds via
their Augmented Reality (AR) spectacles or by
logging in online. What this essentially means
is that users will be able to participate in
high-quality 3D games and social interactions,
live concerts, and much more with just the click
of a button. While its entertainment value is
indeed hard to ignore, it also carries a huge
potential for creating employment opportunities
and boosting the Indian economy. For More
