4What is Breast Cancer?
- Breast cancer is formation of abnormal cells,
which grow to form more new cells that are not
required for functional growth processes can lead
to the formation of a mass growth which is called
a tumor. Cancer of the breast results from the
growth of malignant tumors in the glandular
tissues of the breast. Today, more women are
surviving breast cancer than ever before. Well
over 2 million women have been recorded to have
survived breast cancer. With early detection and
prompt appropriate treatment, the outlook for
women with breast cancer is typically positive.
5Stages of Breast Cancer
- Stages of breast cancer are usually expressed as
a number on a scale 0 to IV, with level 0
describing non-invasive malignancies that remain
within their initial location and stage 4
describing invasive cancers which have spread
outside the breast to other parts of the body.
Additionally, there is the TNM staging system.
Physical examination and biopsy reports are
helpful in determining the stage of breast
cancer. Chest x-rays, mammograms of both breasts,
blood tests, MRI, CT scan are other tests
performed in determining the stage of the cancer.
The TNM system is the most commonly used system.
6Stages of Breast Cancer
- Stage 0 and I These stages represent the
earliest detection of breast cancer development.
At Stage 0 and 1, the cancer cells are confined
to a very limited area. - Stage IIThis is also an early stage of breast
cancer, but there are indications that cancerous
cells have started growing and or spreading. The
spread is confined to the breast area and can be
effectively treated. - Stage III At this stage breast cancer is
considered to be advanced cancer. At this stage,
there is evidence that the cancer cells are
invading surrounding tissues near the breast. - Stage IVThis stage of breast cancer indicates
that the cancerous cells have spread started from
the breast to another region of the body.
7Screening For Breast Cancer
- The need to screen or not to screen for breast
cancer can present a dilemma. This problem might
not be simply medical but the matter of
economics. Diagnosis of malignancy, whether
initial or in a recurrent situation, is the
period of greatest stress for anyone who has
cancer. This crisis is characterized by sadness
or depression, confusion, fear (or anxiety), and
sometimes anger. - The major reason for screening women for cancer
of the breast is that the discovery of the tumor
in its earliest stage when medical and surgical
treatment are most effective in reducing
mortality.

- and
- Chemotherapy
9Treatment Procedure and Chemotherapy
- After the detection of breast cancer, the
physician will make a determination of its stage.
This gives an insight if the cancer is spreading,
if so, to what parts of the body. More tests can
also be performed to help determine the stage.
Knowing the stage of the disease helps the doctor
put together a treatment regimen. - The treatment regimen for breast cancer is highly
dependent on the age, and overall health of the
woman. Other factors to be considered are the
type, stage, and location of the tumor, as well
as if the cancer is confined to the breast or has
moved to other parts of the body. The surgery
chemotherapy hormone therapy and radiation are
adopted ways.
10Breast Cancer Prevention
- In case of breast cancer, the risk of developing
an advanced form of the disease can be greatly
reduced by early detection. - Drugs are now available to treat or stop breast
cancer. Chemo-preventive agents including
Tamoxifen and Raloxifene take action to prevent
the development of breast cancer simply by
truncating the process of initiation and
promotion of tumors genes. The antiestrogenic
effect of these drugs also appears to lead to
growth inhibition of cancerous cells.
Chemoprevention is the most encouraging
intervention for achieving prevention at this
time.
