A Beginner's Guide to Wavelength Division
Multiplexing (WDM)
  • By Versitron Inc.

2
Introduction
  • Wavelength Division Multiplexing has been the
preferred choice of technology for transmission
of data in the form of light signals over a fiber
cable. It helps in maximizing the capacity of
fiber network and avoids excessive wiring.
  • This technology was initially used only by
private carriers and service providers. But with
    consistent upgradation and technical
improvements, WDM has been widely used by
    government organizations, data centers etc.

3
What is Wavelength Division Multiplexing?
  • WDM is a technique that multiplexes individual
light wavelengths for transmitting data over a
single medium. WDM components work opposite at
the receiving end by de-muxing the combined light
wavelength back into an individual and routed to
    their receivers.
  • To put it simply, the WDM system combines signals
with multiplexing (MUX) and separates them using
    de-multiplexing (DEMUX).
  • This technology is mainly used in
    telecommunication applications.

4
Advantages of Wavelength Division Multiplexing
(WDM)
  • It has ultra-large data transmission capacity.
  • It easily connects new channels without
    disrupting the existing network traffic
  • All wavelengths are independent which ensure
    transmission transparency
  • WDM System offers reliability.
  • This technology maximizes fiber utilization and
    optimizes overall network investments.

5
Classification of WDM
  • Wavelength Division Multiplexing is divided into
    two categories
  • CWDM i.e. Coarse Wavelength Division
    Multiplexing This technology combines multiple
signals at various wavelengths. CWDM is
compatible with both GBIC and SFP Connections.
  • DWDM i.e. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing
This technology is a vital form of fiber optic
    communications. It intensely increases the
bandwidth of a single fiber cable. it is used in
    cloud data centers.

6
Components of WDM
  • There are 4 main components of Wavelength
    Division Multiplexing (WDM)
  • Transceivers
  • Mux and De-Mux
  • Patch Cable
  • Dark Fiber Network
