2What is Hearing Loss?
Hearing loss is when there is sudden or gradual
decrease in how well you hear. It is one of the
most common conditions that affect older and
elderly adults. Nearly 1 in 3 people between the
age of 65 and 75 has hearing loss. Approximately
50 of People older than 75 have difficulty in
hearing. Person with hearing loss finds harder to
understand and follow doctors advice, to respond
to warnings and to hear doorbells and alarms.
Hearing loss also make it difficult to enjoy
talking with family and friends. All these can be
frustrating, embarrassing and even dangerous.
3Signs Of Hearing Loss
Hearing loss can either be gradual over the
period or emerge suddenly. In either onset of
hearing loss there are some common indications.
One can suspect hearing loss if they experience
any of the signs below.
4 Socially
- Difficulty understanding speech in group or in
the background noise
- Ask people to repeat frequently
- Think other people sound muffled, dont speak
distinctly or as if they are mumbling - Have difficulty hearing women and children
- Turns up TV or radio to higher volume
- Lip read or watch peoples face when they talk
to you - Tinnitus or ringing in your ears
5Emotionally
- Notice you are annoyed at people because you
cannot hear or understand them - Feel stressed out because of straining to hear
what others are saying - Embarrassed to meet people because you
misunderstand them as what others are saying - Feels nervous about trying to hear and to
understand - Avoid social situations because of difficulty in
hearing
Medically
- Have family history of hearing loss
- Are on or took medications (ototoxic drugs) that
can harm the hearing system - Are or have been exposed to loud sounds
- Have diabetes or circulation problems
