Title: Sardar Patel's Post-Partition Role

1
Sardar Patel Role after Partition
World War II was over in the summer of 1945. This
was also when Indias leaders were freed, held
since 1942 as part of their Quit India call. Two
years later, Prime Minister Attlee announced in
London on February 21, 1947, that Indian power
would be transferred to British hands. He stated
that Mountbatten would take over as Viceroy of
India from Wavell and help to plan Britains exit.

Congress leaders Sardar Patel, Nehru and
president Kripalani, and Jinnah (president),
Liaqat, Nishtar and Nishtar, leaders of the
Muslim League, Liaqat, Nishtar and Nishtar, gave
their consent to Mountbattens plan for
independence. This plan was made public on June
3. The AICC ratified the plan signed by
Kripalani, Nehru, and Patel. King George VI
signed the Indian Independence Act on July 18. It
contained many of the plans most important
features. This Act gave power to two Constituent
Assemblies that had been activated at the time.
One for Pakistan and Bangladesh today, the other
for post-Partition India. The option for princely
states to join one of these areas was
available. This is all well-known. However, some
popular ideas about 1947 and those who supported
or opposed Partition need to be dismantled. It is
completely false to claim that the two-nation
theory was accepted by 1947. Nehru, however,
greeted free India at mid-August midnight with
his Tryst with Destiny speech. It was an India
for all and not a Hindu India. Jinnah spoke of a
Pakistan that was not Islamic in the speech of
August 11, 1947. Despite Pakistans rapid
religious journeys, the Indian Constitution was
finalized in 1949 and emphasized the equality of
all Indians, regardless of their religion.

False is also the current chatter that Gandhi was
pro-Muslim and Nehru vulnerable to the magics of
Lord and Lady Mountbatten. Patels
transformation from being against Partition to
accepting it enthusiastically has been described
in many accounts, including my 1990 biography of
the Sardar. Patel was in favor of the separation
of Pakistan by December 1946, nine months before
the 1947 Partition. Separation would allow vast
India to continue to have a strong central
administration. It would also eliminate the
Leagues ability to block. After violence
against Sikhs, Hindus, and other people in
Punjabs western Punjab, Congress Working
Committee adopted a resolution, Kripalani as the
chair, calling for the division of Punjab into
two halves. A West Punjab with Muslims
predominating, and an East Punjab in which Hindus
and Sikhs outnumber Muslims. The Sardar
Patel Peace and Unity Award recognizes and honors
individuals who have fought against all odds to
make the country a better place. Yes, the apply
for peace award is a civil award from
Accreditation Management Systems. It recognizes
and celebrates those passionate about social
empowerment and community welfare while
positively contributing to our society.
