What is Mass Flow Rate?

What is Mass Flow Meter?

• A mass flow meter, is also known as an inertial
  flow meter.
• It measures the mass flow rate of a fluid flowing
  through a tube.
• The mass flow rate is defined as the mass of a
  fluid passing through a fixed point in one unit
  of time.

Difference between Mass Flow and Volumetric Flow
Mass Flow Volumetric Flow
Mass Flow rate is the total molecular mass passing through a cross-section of a given pipeline per unit of time.   Volumetric Flow rate is the total volume occupied by the molecular mass that passes through the cross-section of a given pipeline per unit time
Precisely measures the flow of gas molecules into or out of a process, regardless of temperature or pressure conditions Measures flow of gas without considering the density of the process gas  
Mass Flow is the amount of a mass moving through an instrument over time.   Volumetric flow is a three-dimensional measure of a substance moving through an instrument over time.  
Measured in pounds/hour or kilograms/second or in similar international units. Popular units of measurement for volumetric flow rate are meters3 /second, millilitres/second, or feet3/hour.

Types of Mass Flow Meter

• There are two types of mass flow meters.
• Direct measurement of Mass flow rate-
• Meters based on Coriolis principle or Thermal
  Dispersion principle are Direct Mass flow meters
• Indirect method of measuring mass flow rate-
• Meters based on turbine, electromagnetic,
  differential pressure, etc. principle can be
  converted to Indirect Mass Flow Meters.
