Leadership Analysis
  • Steve Jobs

2
Introduction
  • Under his leadership, the world got to enjoy
    technological advancements such as the
    introduction of personal computers developed
smartphones that proved superior over others in
the market increased popularity for animated
movies introduced new ways of downloading and
listening to music enhanced the efficiency of
digital publishing and made retail stores
    popular.
  • His contributions especially in the field of
technology have raised him to great heights and
despite his strict approach when dealing with
employees, the leadership skills he possesses has
brought him great success especially in the field
    of technology.

3
Background
  • Steve jobs were born on 24th February, 1995 and
was later adopted by Clara and Paul jobs
    (Parsons, 2018).
  • When he was enrolled in college however, he
dropped out after the first semester and
entertained the idea of starting his own
    business.
  • In 1976, he teamed up with Steve Woznick and
started Apple in Steve Jobs garage (Parsons,
    2018).
  • The company enjoyed great success due to the
ingenuity of the two leaders and also the range
    of products sold.
  • In 1984, Apple introduced The Macintosh which was
among the most popular technological advancement
    in its time (Parsons, 2018).

4
Jobs Loci of control
  • His personalities played a major role in the
leadership approaches he took as he was unwilling
to divert from something he believed in, even
when social norms dictated otherwise James,
    2013).
  • Instead of abiding to normal rules, Jobs relied
on his passion, knowledge and experience to
dictate what actions to take and this greatly
helped him to differentiate his company and the
products it sold from others in the market.

5
Jobs approach towards competitors
  • While fixing the problem only required an upgrade
for the iMac cd drive, Jobs opted for an
alternative solution that ended up transforming
    the music industry (Elliot, 2011).
  • Jobs led the development of the iPod, a device
that gave the user access to a wide variety of
music iTunes and ITunes store which allowed
customers to buy, store, listen and share music.
  • When the iMac was in the development stage, Jobs
focused on making it a tool that would assist
users to manage their videos and photos.
  • He however neglected the music aspect and this
greatly put the iMac at a disadvantage.
  • Customers would use their personal computers to
download and swap music and then rip and burn
them in Cds for future use.

6
Limitations
  • Most people described him as a strict leader who
did not entertain employees that did not meet his
    expectations.
  • He operated in the belief that the team was a
major contributor on the success of the company
and therefore only chose to work with the
individuals who were best in their fields
    (Elliot, 2012).
  • The belief greatly contributed to his harsh
treatment of employees as he would fire them if
anyone performed below the expected level.
  • While it is true that Jobs had a tense
relationship with his employees, his strict
nature was of little significance compared to the
positive impact that he had on them during the
    time they worked under him.
  • Most of the employees not only stayed at apple
but also made major contributions towards the
development of the Mac Book, iPad, iPod, iPhone,
App store and other features that would not have
been possible without the leadership of Steve
    Jobs (Gallo, 2010).
