Program? Damping-off is a destructive disease of
the plant seedlings. It is a destructive disease
that affects the base of the stem making it
weaker, thinner and eventually unable to stay
upright. This infection can be caused by various
seed and soil borne fungi and other fungal like
oomycetes suc has Rhizoctoniasolani,
Aphanomycescochlioides, and species of Pythium,
Phytophthora, Botrytis, Fusarium,
Cylindrocladium, Diplodia, Phoma and Alternaria.
Given the numerous and various amounts of
pathogens, this disease can affect a wide range
of plant species. There are 2 types of damping
off preemergence, in which sprouting seeds
decay in soil and young seedlings rot before
emergence. And second one which is
postemergence, in which newly emerged seedlings
suddenly wilt, collapse, and die from a soft rot
at the soil line. Damping off can also happen in
regular plants, or any living plants for that
matter, once plants have mature leaves and a
well-developed root system, they are better able
to naturally resist the fungus or mold that
causes damping off. Woody seedlings wilt and
wither but remain upright root decay often
follows. Greatest losses occur in cold wet soils
in which germination and emergence are slow,
often in indoor conditions. Damping off is not
harmful to humans, they do however need to be
wearing protective gear to ensure that no mold or
wet diseased soil touches their raw
hands. Damping-off can be avoided by starting
seed in light, well-drained, well-prepared soil
or sterile mix (containing perlite, peat moss, or
vermiculite). You could also treat the soil with
steam, dry heat or a fumigant. Another effective
measure is avoiding overcrowding, excessive
shade, overwatering, too deep planting, and over
fertilizing, and sowing crack-free, healthy seed
dusted with fungicide seed protectant. An early
outbreak can be controlled by applying a
fungicide solution.
