Hydraulic System Components
  • Many hydraulic systems have a variety of pumps
that may be manual, electric, or engine driven.
Some use manual or electric pumps only on the
ground, while others only use them during
high-demand situations such as gear retraction or
during high-speed operations. Regardless of the
system, a pump is an important component in a
hydraulic system. Here are some important
considerations when choosing a pump for your
    hydraulic system.

Hydraulic System Components
  • A hydraulic system has several types of flow
control valves, all of which are used to control
the fluid flow. These valves control the pressure
of the system and allow various components to
function. Some examples of these valves are
    selector valves, sequence valves, priority
valves, shuttle valves, hydraulic fuses, and
more. A selector valve controls the direction of
movement of the hydraulic actuating cylinder and
provides a path for the return of hydraulic fluid
    to the reservoir.

Filters are used to remove foreign particles
  • In order to ensure that your hydraulic system
remains as efficient as possible, you must
properly maintain and clean your filter. Foreign
particles present in your hydraulic fluid may
cause a number of problems in your system.
Properly maintained filters will increase the
mean time between component failures and ensure
that your machine runs smoothly. This process
will be illustrated by the flow chart below. You
will need to evaluate your filtration system to
determine what components should be cleaned.

Directional control valve
  • There are several types of directional control
valves in a hydraulic system. The types include
the ball, butterfly, needle, gate, and piston.
    These valves are usually electronically
controlled, though some models may be operated
manually. When activated, they allow fluid to
flow through one side and close off the other.
They can be used in any number of hydraulic
applications, from hydraulic pumps to air
compressors. Read on to learn more about this
    type of valve.

Hydraulic actuator reservoir
  • A hydraulic actuator reservoir is an important
component of a hydraulic system. They serve a
variety of purposes and are used to store the
hydraulic fluid when not in use. The hydraulic
actuator reservoir also acts as a means to
control the amount of heat transferred and the
initial force applied to a system. They are also
used to separate air and moisture from the
hydraulic fluid, preventing the fluid from
    becoming contaminated. The hydraulic actuator
reservoir is often part of a machine's body.
