1
Security Tips If Living Alone for The First Time
2
  • Moving out of home and into your own place is an
important milestone in anyones life, whatever
your age, but it can take some adjusting to, and
there are often some steep learning curves to
    adjust to!
  • Staying safe in your new home is paramount, and
by following the security tips below, you can
enjoy your new, independent life, without the
fear of becoming a victim of crime

3
  • Try not to advertise the fact that you live alone
  • Of course your friends and family will know that
youre now living alone, but everybody else
doesnt need to know. Dont mention it on social
media, and dont make it obvious to anyone who
might be able to see into your home. Hang drapes
or blinds at all ground floor windows to prevent
anyone from peeping inside, and if you need to
call a tradesperson to fix anything or set up
cable TV for example, have a friend be with you
    when the work takes place.

4
  • Have a smart camera installed at your front door
  • With a two-way audio smart camera, you can
communicate with whoever is at the door without
them having to know that youre alone, and if you
live in an apartment where such cameras might not
be allowed, have a peep hole installed so that
you can at least see who is at the door or
    outside in the corridor.
  • Make sure you have a set of spare keys
  • When you live alone, usually, the only person
that can get you back inside when youve lost
your keys or had them stolen, is a licensed
residential locksmith. However, with a spare set
of keys that arent locked inside your home (they
may even be with as close friend or relative),
you can get back inside whenever you need to,
without having to rely on anyone else.

5
  • Burglar alarms
  • If you live in a house, consider having a burglar
alarm installed, as not only will this alert both
you and the local police authority to a potential
break-in in your absence, but they can be a great
    deterrent for crime, too.
  • Make sure your new home and contents are insured
  • In the event that your home is broken into, or is
involved in some kind of emergency in which
property and belongings are damaged, youll want
to have an updated insurance policy that offers
you an adequate level of coverage.

6
  • While there are many things to think about when
living alone for the first time, not least
security, being aware of all of the above can
help to make sure that youre prepared in the
event of a security issue, and having a
conversation about home security with your local
    locksmith, can be reassuring, too.
