Title: Introduction To Thai Boxing - Muay Thai
1Thai Boxing - Muay Thai
2Introduction to Thai Boxing
Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, is multifaceted since
it is a sport, a martial art, a science, and an
undeniable art form that has been passed down
from generation to generation for over 2000
years. Originally from ancient China, this
discipline took on Thai culture and style as soon
as it arrived in Thailand.
If you are interested in being introduced to a
world where courage and defiance are welcome
guests, Muay Thai is a science that anyone can
learn. Throughout history, this art form has gone
through ups and downs in some periods it was
regarded as a fundamental value, in others it was
considered a cultural decay, as everything hinged
on the king who ruled at the time.
3During King Rama VI's reign in 1921, a sports
competition generated interest in this ancient
discipline. A Thai boxing stadium was built
inside the college that year by order of king
Nontisen Surentara Pakdi. A Muay Thai match will
take place on Saturday in Suan Kulab. When
boxers fought then, their hands were wrapped in
ropes as they fought in boxing rings. Entrance
tickets cost between 50 Satang and 1 Baht. As
far as I know, there were only 11 rounds of 3
minutes each with the ropes in the hands, and one
referee but no judges to score the
fights. Initially, a wooden ring set up for
competitions was built on the regular Suan Kulab
college floor, however only the first competition
was held there. As a result, even Thai fighters
under international practices were required to
wear Thai boxing gloves, and the boxing rings had
to meet international standards.
4Once Thai men learned how to fight and what Thai
boxing was supposed to be like, they knew
perfectly what Muay Thai was all about, which
varied from trainer to trainer and camp to camp.
As a result, Ram Muay displays differences
between regions, which reflect this diversity.
Indians also became accustomed to Thai boxing in
a short period of time. The dynastic line that
led to becoming king had to study and master the
Kanika, which concerned body movements, the
Atihasa, which concerned the stories of the
ancient warriors and heroes, the Maya, which is
the art of boxing, and finally the Munta, which
concerned magical prayers. In the ancient times,
this art was known as Mai Si Sok in the
Ayutthaya period and early Rattanasokin period,
it became Pahuyuth ("multi-faced" combat). Muay
Tai became Muay Thai during the Rattanasokin
period and Muay Thai after Thailand adopted the
name Siam. The Thai boxing master who took the
secrets of this art with him to his grave has led
to the disappearance of the secrets of this art
with the passing of his death.

7What is Thai Boxing
Thai boxing is defined as "exchange of attacks"
a form of fighting practiced in Thailand by
children and adults alike, men and women. An
opponent may use various parts of their bodies or
even the entire body as a weapon in such a fight.
All of these elements are considered part of Thai
boxing, from punches and kicks to heads and
squeezes. A man's natural strength and abilities
determine the way he fights in Muay Thai. Thai
boxing has always been an essential part of Thai
culture since ancient times and is the national
sport of Thailand. Thai Boxing was known to the
ancestors as well as to those who practice it
today as the essence of Muay Thai and its
techniques were known to the ancestors. During
the fight, the fighters wrapped cotton ropes
around their hands and tied knots between their
fingers. Then, to harden the surface of these
"bands," glue and shattered glass were sprinkled
onto them. The Thai boxers however continued to
use kicks and elbows during a match as part of
their style of boxing. The Thai people used
natural weapons which they taught from generation
to generation.

9Summary
A sense of respect pervades the ring as
traditional music plays, and there is a sense of
gratitude to those who helped him train, to both
his family and to the respected teacher who
enabled him to understand the basic principles of
Thai boxing. In muay thai, all these thoughts are
summed up in the wai khruu ceremony, which is a
way to pay homage to one's master.
